A loaded top trim ‘21 F-150 Limited with the 3.5L Hybrid V6 (which is a $1900 option) and 4 wheel drive is nearly $78k. I would’ ve done a full pricing and option break down for you guys but the F-150 has so many configurations and options it would’ ve turned into a TL;DR and wouldn’t have had that many views.

There are more trim/option combinations on the F-150 than there are ways to shuffle a deck of cards.

I remember laughing at people in my head five years ago for paying that much for a 350. Wow.

Oh this Super Duty is crazy too. A loaded out F-450 Limited is just under $93k. Crazy thing is there is actually a market for these things.

I don’t thin there are 8e67 ways to configure an f150

High end is growing faster than the lower end though. I think if you aren’t liberal with your options you can get a decent price on a lower spec truck.

Makes 75k for a well optioned Defender sound like a steal!

My dad got a new 2000 F-250 that had everything and stickered for ~$30k, which was a lot of money for a truck.
Twenty years later, my Gladiator stickered for $43k and does n’t even have leather seats.

Personally 35-40k is my hard stop for anything normal/practical. If I’m thinking of spending more 35k or more my vision goes immediately to something special and fun.
Also, the interiors of some most of these super expensive trucks aren ’t even as nice as my GOLF.

not with that attitude

As a reminder, $38k gets you adequately equipped F-150 XLT with cloth seats and 17" aluminium wheels. But hey that also includes the 2.7 Ecoboost V6 so you can pass people!

I wonder the percentage of the market that’s paying a quarter of their income on it with 72+ month financing . I knew an operator at Schlumberger that was paying ~$1100 a month for 72 months on a Dodge 2500.

Sure, but you can still get them in much more affordable configuration without feeling poor.
Factor in that fact all full size trucks have about $10,000 padding in their MSRP that usually can be taken right off the bad due to historic negotiations within that market. Even more depending on special programs & marketing.
My 2019 RAM Rebel, which is over a year old, is currently worth more than what I paid for it. Why? Because I got it for $39,000 with a MSRP of $52,000. Current resale book is $43,000!
This is one of the reasons why trucks have historically high resale value along with a depreciation curve that is flatter than any other segment, value retention over 5-10 years is the highest for full size trucks. Only the Jeep Wrangler is higher overall.
So yes you pay more these days, even with a built-in discount, but they hold value better than any other segment overall. Worst thing you can buy in terms of value is a German sedan, their resale after just 3 years is the lowest by far.
Try finding a decent condition, lower mileage pick-up just a few years old, might as well buy new they are so expensive . But looking for a BMW F30 to replace my E90? Tons of great cheap options.

From my experience and talking to people I know in the industry, its a nice bulk of the market. Many places don’ t even give the customer an option on 60 month financing anymore unless they specifically say or ask for 60 months or lower. From what I’ve heard, To prevent customers from walking, they present the low payments first and purposely dont mention the loan length until they have them in financing signing. Many people are driving nice cars right now but are way over their head.

Its pretty much just best to wait a year or 2 or 3 to purchase so those rebates can pile on.

You can get a well optioned Defender with 3 rows for around $10k less than that
... ;)

Absolutely, especially right before the mid-cycle refresh where they tack on a slightly different shaped fog light, lol.
However, right now due to Covid and production shortages, has somewhat changed the market. Seeing dealers with only 7 trucks instead of 150.

I sold GMC trucks for a living right when the latest generation came out.
I would sell $70k trucks that had no radar cruise, while driving to work in a GTI that did!

At the top of the range, yes, they are expensive . If looking at actual inventory on dealer lots, there are a few with every available option but most of them are the just-nice-enough trim levels. So, people will go look at the $78k F150 with 28 speaker sound system, corinthian wagyu ballsack leather , and 12 stage heated and cooled seats with electro-hydraulic taint ticklers.
Then they drive home in the more reasonably optioned one that has a $50,025 sticker price, $10,050 in rebates and discounts to get the selling price at $39,975, all with an 84 month loan and 3 different extended warranties.
It’s marketing, that’s it .

I haven’t tried to buy a car in a while, so I can’t say what dealers are pushing with loans. I financed both my cars with 60 month loans, with the intention of paying them off early, which I did. No one but PNC offered me 60 months on the 3 as it was 8 years old when I bought it. I got some counters at 48 months, but I wanted the lower payment so I could overpay and the extra money go to principal. I know that might be atypical, but a little finical knowledge goes a long way and it seems most people don’t think that far ahead.

Median household income is like just over 60k in this country and average new vehicle prices are now pushing 35k.
So yes..new vehicle prices are very high for the income of a great deal of ppl in this country.
![]() 09/16/2020 at 15:19 |
|
True, the median car price 20 years ago was $21,000, if you calculated inflation, that should be $32,000 today.
I think currently, median prices for 2020 is $37,8 00!
But we also have cars with far more technology for comfort, convenience and safety that people are buying. Also low interest high term loans that allow people to buy more than they could in the past to help explain the higher than inflation prices.

I’ve driven both, the i6 isn’t worth the extra money IMHO. i4 moves when you want it too, plus it comes with 18's which give you a much broader selection for off road tires.
Here is what you can get for around $63k in the i4:

Yes, agreed. And im not really trying to be a jerk or anything here but just adding some context to the prices.
If were talking median income is 60+k than it stands to reason that the avg household income is lower than the median. Im lucky enough to have no debt besides a modest mortgage and make a good income and i think car prices are nuts. I cant imagine what it must be like for folks who are struggling and need to get a car.
Those 7-8 year loans will soon become lodestones around the necks of a lot of consumers as entire public facing service sectors of hte economy get neutered by covid-19. Its grim!

btw, i am very dumb and confused median and average. My bad! I worked till 3am last night is my excuse. :) But yeah.. cars are pricey!
![]() 09/16/2020 at 16:27 |
|
Not at all, you made a very good point there, cars are pricier than inflation, people are buying way more than they could have afforded just years ago because of loan tools now.
What’s crazy is that during this pandemic, it’s the most expensive vehicles selling the best.

Then I’m an idiot, I thought they were kinda the same thing as well :)

I’ve built about two dozen on the website and drove the 6. Really need to drive a 4 also but my dealer didn't have one.

Yeah I had the dealer call me as soon as one rolled off the truck, it’s 300hp so drives like a 300hp SUV that weighs
5,165 lbs. It’s not going to win drag races but it’s more than capable for day to day duties. Plus, that extra cash can go to other goodies like sliders...

In all reality that's about the same power and weight as my R-class anyways. But man I like that 6 and it's ever-so-slightly better fuel economy. It's a ways off before/if I order one so I've got a while to figure out what I want.

Heh, I put my deposit on my order down Monday. I went with the i4 mainly because of wheel size and price. Going in to sign everything tomorrow.

I think a sizeable chunk of younger folks in the market. I have a cousin who has gotten drunk and blabered on about how much he makes and other times how much he spending. I’d be wanting to puke if I had a kid, mortgage and 800 a month truck payment. that I’m also blinging out and ruining.

Though the stats for average buyers are a bit higher than I was expecti ng .

I get it everyone wants a nice place to park their behind after a long day at work. I seem find that the best bang for your buck is used cars in the 4-5 year old range.

Hmmmmmmmm
An f150 weighs a boot 4500lb which is 2041165.67 grams Assuming the f150 is all steel, which is 56g / mole. So there is 36580 moles , or 2e28 atoms in an f150. So there is more ways to shuffle a deck than atoms in an f150. And I think splitting attoms would count as a poor attitude
![]() 09/17/2020 at 08:03 |

Those are a bit higher than I expected as well, but I guess if you’ve got both people in your household working full time and making $20 /hr that’s 80k a year. Still I wouldn’t want to make that payment on that salary.
![]() 09/17/2020 at 08:39 |

true household income really screws that up. Average and not mean. Throw one doctor in and cancels out 10 buyers earning 40k.

Huh, could have sworn I hit publish on my reply. Anywho, yeah that’s my build. Just the necessities needed for a great overlanding rig.
