Continuing to teach our children skills they will probably never use as an adult.

So many kids will be confused by this since they’ve never see an actual shifter in a car.

It makes me sad a lot of kids will never know what this even is :(

At least someone is trying

It makes me said that I may never drive another stick.

Yeah, I had that thought too. That’s why I said “probably.” Hopefully it will inspire somebody.

There should be a hand crank starter installed on the other side.

Had my 13 year old son out in the field Monday evening for his second lesson in my manual Tacoma. =)

They probably think that on/off switch to the left is the transmission.

That’s why I’m so disappointed that a drunk took out my Mk IV Golf. I really wanted it to be around so I could teach my boys how to drive it. Even if they never owned a manual car, they would have a life skill.

Ignition on the left makes it a Porsche right? But being German shouldn’t reverse be on the top left?

That sucks...
Ask a friend, or buy a beater!

Wow our parks only have the 3- speed version. I’ve been meaning to post:

Yeah, my dad put me in a manual truck in Montana and it was not an easy truck. Once I could drive that I could drive anything. I was 12 or something, I had to put all my weight on the clutch. Buy a cheap old Chevy truck!

The answer is a cheap, rusty Miata that can be wrecked.

I have definitely considered the beater. Putting money into a backyard renovation and college first, though.

Everything is bigger in Texas. Or so it’s said.

I’ve told my daughter that I want her to learn to drive a stick shift, and she says she’s up for it. I’m interested to see how well I can communicate it to her in words from the passenger seat. If so, then she might get some seat time in my sister’s Acura.

When I was 16, we had a 4 speed Rabbit. I knew the theory, but lacked the repetition and feel. I finally spent an hour or so in a flat parking lot doing nothing but finding the friction point. Once I learned that, I was good to go.

That’s the key. It’s different for every car, but once you know what to look for, you can learn any car with a little practice.

Still more useful knowledge than half the crap they teach in class

The switch goes "on, off, more on."

That’s exactly how I learned: at age 14, from my uncle Bill, in a 1982
Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler. He basically drove me out into the middle of a
field, showed me what everything did, said “drive it back to the house when you know how,” and walked away.

Haha! I gave him a little more instruction than that.
But I’m a much better teacher than my dad was!

I’m hoping my next car after Humdrum will at least be my final ICE car and stick....EVs just aren’t dropping in price far enough for me to afford one, even on the used market here. Plus...stick = far more fun and enjoyable to me to drive...
