Kinja'd!!!

For those of you that followed my career stuff a year ago... That’s kind of a big deal lol. It’s been nice having some consistency for once.

I asked for and received a promotion today. This is s till so mewhat surreal, as when I initially started, I never imagined I’d have a reason to stay with this company longterm. Now, I can see myself staying five or ten years at minimum, and honestly... That doesn’t depress me in the slightest. I like the job, even with the miserable 16 hour days that pop up every now and again.

On that note, m y condo has been a small but steady source of income these past few months. The tenants have been lovely, and maintenance has been nothing more than a (planned) water tank and a replacement fire alarm. I know things won’t always be so smooth, but I still want to continue down that road with another rental property in late 2021. Whether that’s a townhouse or house; local, or 100 miles away, will depend on how much extra savings I can squeeze out of every paycheck. Which means no new bikes, no cars, cashing in my PTO this year and being as frugal as possible. Sorry Ducati, I’ll open up my wallet to you someday :(

Let me leave yo u with one of my favorite web comics, Badly Drawn Dolphin.

Congratulations, I hope the job continues to be a success for you.

We should collect our favorite webcomics. For me, I keep in regular contact with these:

https://www.gunnerkrigg.com

https://questionablecontent.net

https://xkcd.com

And these are comics I’ve enjoyed in the past and should check back in on:

Would’ve been just over 30 years now  if I stayed here in 2000

My 5 year company would have been 7 if I hadn’t left for *checks notes* 9 months.

Doubled my money though

I am in my 19 th year in this city and my 13th at this job. When I moved here, I thought 6 years max.

Q uestionable Content has been a long run. It’s on my regular list. I used to have maybe 20-25 regular comics. Now maybe like 6.

It’s hard for me to sustain interest in comics with infrequent/irregular posting schedules, which is why Gunnerkrigg Court and Questionable Content keep me coming back for more and I’ve pretty much given up on everything else.

XKCD is, of course, brilliant and not serialized, so I can drop in whenever I feel like a laugh.

Remember, you’ve always got a solid backup gig as a writer of Gothic Christmas children’s books

Congrats. I remember the posts from last year and enjoyed your mental math / choose your own adventure period where you were figuring out the next steps. Great work! We also rented our condo once me moved to a house but are now selling as we couldn’t get the rent to that magic 1% of value range.  Real estate is often a nice investment but if you can get better return from a safe-ish retirement account that might be better as real estate ties you down.  With your job you could probably relocate to anywhere you want.

Congrats! Sometimes the time absolutely flies. I’ve been at my job for 5 and a half years and thought I’d be there 6 months when I took it.

That’s kind of a weird feeling and nice when you find it. Very few places are worth dedicating a lot of time to.

I have never done more than 6 years at a single company , and that was a place where my predecessor was for 12 years (it was weird because 3 is a long time in my industry) . I would not have left if they hadn’t completely screwed up to the point I knew they were going under (and they did about 6 months after I left). I did 4.5 with the company after it, but now I’m back in jobs with a very clear <3 year shelf life... I did 16 months at my last one and I’m at 18 here (and if it wasn’t for perpetual reorgs in my group , I’d be seriously looking for something else by now, but I have done 3 different ‘ jobs’ in that time and I’m about to start my next in a month) .

What is it like working outside right now?

Is a pretty good comic, generally updates every couple of days and has been going for a while. Very human vs crazy universe. The art is often mindbendingly detailed for a webcomic. The story is ebbs and flows but never stops being neat. Giant battles with weird monsters and gods. There are some longish plot/character development bits, but stays random enough to hold my attention.

http://sssscomic.com

Has also been going for quite a while and is fairly regularly updated. With as spoiler- less warning as I can get, the first part of the comic is solely a preface. Which I only drop as I personally found it almost readership- ending-jarring as I was onboard this one early on, so caught up very fast and just as I thought I knew where it was headed it pulled a fast changeup . But then the story gets to where the creator was (now obviously)  actually going with it. Is very future world gooey monster fantasy, with some weird magic and spirit stuff mixed in there. I think the art is also pretty amazing.

I also go long periods of not checking XKCD. I hit it up once in a while when I’m feeling extra sciencey.

Working outside hasn’t seemed to bother anyone on the team , which really surprised me. The sepia-tinged landscapes have certainly been unique though.

I’ve been chatting with a n eighbor who has jumped around most of the major tech companies here. He gave me a really interesting rundown on the level system and how staying long-term generally compares negatively to bouncing around in terms of gaining rank and compensation. Super interesting.
