I mean I do have one cutting board that’s too pretty to use, but yeah that sounds like a defect. Also a reminder that I need to oil my wood boards.

We have a very nice cutting board that my wife refuses to use because it was made by one of her  cousins and it’s “too pretty to use.” It’s just taking up space in our cabinet.

Can somebody with legal experience explain to me why this isn’t false advertising?

Mine is one of these:

At $70 (and still in production) it’s not so valuable (and one bit of wood has a bit of natural stain developing), but it also feels lik e crime to put knife marks in such a wonderfully inlaid piece of wood. Maybe a dull knife with soft cheeses and good friends.

That’s interesting. Mass produced inlay work. Ours is a hand-made custom design with at least three kinds of wood, but no inlay work. Her cousin makes them in batches, probably from cutoffs/scraps from other projects. I’ve met the guy once, so I really haven’t had a chance to talk to him about his process. I’ve seen enough woodworking to know how he put them together, but I don’t know anything about them beyond educated guesses.

My mom has some hand towels like that - my aunt spins her own thread and weaves towels and the like on a loom. They're really well made, no reason to not use them, I've got some and they come out of the washer fine. But, she's afraid to, and just keeps them in a drawer and takes them out once in a while to show company what her sister-in-law makes.

There’s your problem. It’s made by Soft Furnishings LTD. Don’t want a soft cutting board, that’s for sure.

That’s unfortunate. I’m sure your aunt means for them to be used. It’s not like she’s making art meant to be hung on the wall. The women in my family like to paint, specifically on china. That stuff is meant to be displayed, not used. My wife paints on canvas , but also does crochet and taught that to my daughter. So far, they’ve made sweaters, baby blankets, and crocheted toys like stuffed bears. I don’t think anyone has any qualms about using those items.

Yeah, I don't get it. She's weird with things like that. She'll sit in the pool drinking wine out of her good crystal stem ware and get upset when she inevitably breaks a glass on the concrete, but that doesn't have sentimental value from a family member, I guess. I keep telling her to just buy cheap glass wine glasses from the restaurant supply store like I do, but whatever.

I found plates at walmart  once that were labeled "not for food use"

I think it’s more a “cover our ass” type of move. If the board is defective or causes injury somehow  they can point at the label and say “see, we told you not to use it as a cutting board"

That may be the case, but it also may be illegal. For example, in Europe, it’s illegal to mark stuffed animals “not for children under age 3" or the symbol for that. The law says that you have to assume that a stuffed animal will be given to infants and toddlers. You can’t disclaim it with marking. I wouldn’t be surprised if many countries have similar laws that you can’t call a product by a functional name and then claim that it can’t be used as what you call it.
