I sold this car last night for $850. That state of California would have paid me $1,000 to have it crushed, but I’d have to get it to fail a smog test, fill out an application, then go spend an hour or several at Pick-n-Pull waiting for my check. 1991 Corolla Base Model, 238k miles. Supremely dependable. New battery, new Denso radiator, new cat. And MANUAL TRANSMISSION , for you fan bois. Really nimble driver. KYB struts, also... A guy from my job bought it for his cousin. My theory on buying and selling cars is that when I’m done with them, price them to sell and be done with it. This took 24 hours. I’ve owned it more than ten years. It was the dog car , and the dog died and the new dog doesn’t know how to go for rides in the car.

Thoughts?

I think you done good. Much better to let it live on.

Of course, I don’t think I’ve ever sold a car. Totaled, fell apart after 15 years , gave to Goodwill, traded in for Jeep, and Jeep.

I guess the one that fell apart I technically “sold” to a mechanic at the dealership in exchange for whatever they were going to charge me because I left it there too long.

My mom had a burgundy one identically equipped and I literally cried like a baby when she traded it for a 1996 dodge Intrepid. The intrepid was a hell of a car, but that Corolla was my heart. Gah.

I have a brother with a 1990 model in the same color. The car has always been one of two things: rock-solid reliable, or at least super-easy to work on. It’s an automatic (3 speeds), and has some collision damage, but he loves it. He’s expressed an interest in learning to drive stick and I’m sure he’d be all over this in a heartbeat.

I’m offended that I wasn’t offered the opportunity to own this beautiful vehicle.

Good deed by you to keep it alive, and in the inflated lower end of the used car market these days, the buyer got a deal too.

Looks like the plate was issued when the car was new or very young.

Is that why you keep fixing yours? So you don’t have to deal with selling it?

Nice price. Could have sold for $1500 easily.

Keeping cheap, accessible, and reliable transportation on the road is a good thing.

That’s an excellent question. Surely there’s some element of truth to that, but really I do love it and would have a hard time finding another one like it. These are fairly uncommon.

Man for that being the dog car the interior looks to be in excellent shape.

Also very nice  price. That’d be $2k here easy.

Old Toyotas don’t die, they just keep getting passed on to the next person. You could probably take 20 years off that car with a really good detailing and wax job

I’m just teasing :)

But selling a car you like really does turn itself into way too much of a hassle even if financially it might be the better choice.

I’ll tell you what took a decade off that car: synthetic manual transmission lubricant in the transaxle.

My wife had this same car but with an automatic when we got married. I liked the car a lot and drove it myself for a few years. Problem was when the baby came we needed something “safer” so she sold it and we bought a new Altima. Oddly, I’ve gone back to driving a Corolla from time to time. When the kids started driving I bought a Corolla with a stick and they learned on that and its still the kids’ car and when they don’t use it, I drive it.

Fuck California for paying people to destroy old cars, and fuck all of you that don’t have to deal with rust and road salt. You don’t know how nice you have it.

I know. I had an instinctive reaction to yell “I’ll buy it!”. No I do not need a fifth car that doesn’t fill a gap in my fleet. Now if had been a Tercel AWD Wagon or Honda’s equivalent tall Civic AWD wagon...
