My dad has (or had, not sure if they kept it in their move this summer) a very rusty and beat  version of that clamping work bench (‘80s vintage with black plastic instead of that orange). I used it most recently to hold my strut assemblies in place while installing/removing the springs. At some point some sort of mud wasp had built little nest chambers in most of the holes in the tabletop and in between the ribs on those snap in plastic clamps, but thankfully they were not in residence this spring.

We took the new 1998 SAAB on a long trip back in July, unsurprisingly the AC which I had charged by a shop only lasted half way. I had a couple days to figure it out before we left to come back. Turns out the radiator fan running and maybe slightly Reving the engine (1500)  are crucial to getting meaningful readings.  Low side will read way high even if coolant is low if those conditions are not met.

Its a helpful little bugger around the garage.  My friend gave me this one, someone had given it to him but he already had one.

Yep, I’ve always liked it. And even at its age and poor condition, it’s sturdy and the clamps move smoothly, which is about all you can ask.

Good to know, thank you for the tip.  The crazy thing is this one only has a low side port.

Putting the can of refrigerant in a pan of hot water will greatly accelerate getting it into the system and leave a lot less to waste in the can when you’re done.

And it’s not magic, it’s very basic thermodynamics ;)

Gas goes in, cold comes out. You can't explain that! Mysterious!

Well the gauges are indicating things!

I thought about that but wasn't sure if it was safe, but I went out and tried it and it was great! Thanks for the tip!

I had one of those too, an older version with a thicker frame than what they sell nowadays. Gave it to my brother after realizing that I hadn’t used it in many years and it was just taking up space (what little space it takes up when folded, anyway).

The problem is I'm not sure what they indicate.  See, the Volvo doesn't have a high side, so I can't read across the gauges to get the right fill.  Instead, I have to go by the rule of thumb, which is apparently "30-ish".  So I got 30 in, and the air is blowing cold, so I guess that's a win.

It's witchcraft, really.

WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT I noticed the cans got extremely cold but then wouldn’t empty fully as their pressure dropped below operating.

I guess I meant that to be read in Jezza’s voice.
