America’s oldest living WWII veteran. And he said that if he had to do it all over again, he would.

Thanks for po sting this. A s a society we were very fortunate to have soldiers like this, who were willing to say no to the oppression of the axis powers.

During WWII, many German POWs were sent back to the US to work on the farms since so many American boys were fighting overseas. The Germans lived with the American families, and when they went to restaurants, the German POWs were allowed to eat in the dining room while the Black US soldiers were forced to eat from the back door of the kitchen. So yes, the soldiers went to fight Fascism, racism and oppression in Europe, only to come home to the same thing here in America.

Yes, for sure we had (read: have) our own terrible problems here, no doubt. I was not trying to indicate otherwise.

And even Vietnam was not a hell of a lot better. I went into a historical rabbit hole when I got my truck, looking through Korea and Nam. So many things I didn’t know about, my dad was a carrier pilot and doesn’t really talk about the rest of it on shore.

Black kids and poor white kids, while the more affluent, connected white kids got to stay home. Even those who claimed deferments for college were in a position to go to college in the first place.

True, or they were officers in much more favorable locations.

The officers were all college ROTC grads or West Point grads. Therefore, overwhelmingly white. (I have no actual data to support this claim, but I’m pretty sure I’m right.)

Oh for sure, they had experienced people in key positions, but you know how it is, butter bar is in charge of something but the E7s and up are making things actually work.

The expression on his face shows the difference between 18 and 111.
Much respect. Pretty soon all the War 2 vets will be gone, and that’s a big loss.

I took this at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans back in 2017. It’s a great museum.
