2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor SuperCab with 104k miles in Blue Flame Metallic. Completely stock except for the bed cover. This is my first ever “fun” vehicle that doesn’t have to serve daily duty and the first time we’ve ever had 3 vehicles at once. I was looking for a 12-14 model because they have the Torsen diff up front and all have the 6.2L engine. It has the luxury package with heated/cooled leather seats that have memory tied to the keys, but no navigation - yay no silly outdated screen in the center! It does have a small backup camera in the rear view mirror.

I was only looking at these with passing interest until this one popped up on Craigslist in this color without the common graphics on the bed and an enticing asking price. A blue Raptor is ridiculous enough like this - it doesn’t need the stickers on the bed. I’ve been looking for a truck for a while but prices have gone nutty during the pandemic. Basically anything that runs with 4x4 and a bed around here is $5k even if it has 300k, dents all over the body, and seats torn to shreds. The Raptors seem to have pretty much stayed where they were. I paid $25k for this which I’m very happy with. It’s got some dings and scrapes On the body and needs new tires ASAP, but is great overall - especially underneath it looks like it’s never been off road. I’ll fix that in short order... but will need new tires to replace the nearly bald K02s before I do much more than fire roads. I expect these first generation trucks with the 6.2 will hold value pretty well. And if not no big deal - I can just thrash it and enjoy it.

So far I’ve just driven on a test drive last weekend and then a little over an hour today from Santa Fe back to the map dot I live in. It drives like a truck. Not really much to say there besides it has tighter steering in corners than I expected and the width is surprisingly easy to get used to. On the highway it does wander a bit and the ride could be better but that’s not really the point of this thing. The 6.2L is pretty fun to open up, but the 6-speed auto transmission is a little dim witted. I haven’t checked yet to see if it had any sort of Sport mode that can make it kick down quicker. Also 411 horsepower sounds like a lot, but this thing weigh just over 6,000 pounds. It’s... adequate, but not fast. (Full disclosure I live at 7,300 ft, so NA engines are down a little power up here too.) I think the 5.4 base engine it had in the first two model years would feel slow. The best part of the 6.2 is the noise it makes and that it loafs along at like 1500 rpm on the highway. I’m already pondering a cat-back exhaust but first up is the looming $1300ish on tires.

My kids (7 and 11) love this thing. There is a surprisingly decent amount of room in the back seat of this extended cab and they should fit back there fine for a few years. Honestly adults would be OK back there for an hour or so. My wife likes it too, really likes the color, and actually encouraged this purchase. I love her.

Anyway, next up is adding it to the insurance (which in my typical impulsive fashion I didn’t even bother to get a quote on yet) and figuring out how to pay taxes and get it registered at the MVD with their COVID limited schedule. Sorry in advance Oppo but I’ll probably be posting this thing way too much over the next few weeks. Final thought for the night - I never realized how awesome power folding mirrors could be until now.

It’s a beast, looks good. I never had a car with a nav screen before my Acura, I use my phone anyway, but the backup camera is really nice at night since the wagon is sleek and hard to see out the back. I know what you mean about the DMV, I haven’t finished my beast truck yet but I have to do everything for it, I bought it in another state. I haven’t done anything, I even have old plates for it so I have to do a year of manufacture plate application.

6.2 good choice and NP. If I sold my Boss this is what I’d buy or at least that’s what I think I’d do.

I’ve seen jellybean F-150s with lots of miles asking $5k or more here. Only one I’ve seen recently under $4k was a 4x2 V6 regular cab with major paint issues. I don’t know if people are actually getting that money but that’s what they are asking on CL and Facebook.

Ahh I think those might be worth even more. Last of the slab sides. This place is obsessed with older square body trucks. Even GMT400s are going up in price when a few years ago you they were seen as old beaters you could get for a grand. Everything is crazy.

I’ve got a screenshot saved somewhere of a squarebody (pre-GMT400) Chevy truck at Mecum which bidding went up to 50k on it but it failed to meet reserve. It’s nuts. Squarebodies are the new Hemi bubble.
