This is where I quit and did the driver's side.

Now I see it as more of a good start.

I still have to make the bottom of the panel from the wheel opening all the way back at least three inches wide. It would have been easier to do that off the car like the other side, but I’m not great at planning/very good at problem solving.

Pulling some dents, the quarter on this side was holding some tension and changed shape a bit when I sliced it up. That was unfortunate and messed with my plans, but since I’ve got my metal mojo working right now this won’t be impossible. I’ve got to match up the remains of a factory dogleg with the black part that was home made long before we had a parts car. I might slice about a foot out of this rocker and re-do it, but not this summer. Right now i’m worrie d about it being 100% car in the next week or so.

I know this was with a Dodge, but this generation of Mopars always reminds me of these scenes

How Oppo is this car? The unpainted patches of bondo  have to be bringing big points.

This car Is oppo in that it’s trip to the moon miles and a push button automatic. But the one behind it is a blue on blue on blue air cooled rear engine flat six multi carbed 4 speed manual convertible. A nd its smashed up.  Very oppo.

Just how many miles (kilometers?) does it have? It’s more like the official car of the Oppos that just won’t give up.

I could never quite place that car behind it. Corvair is so Oppo.

a solid 250,000 year round Canadian miles, before it quit counting.  Was driven daily for 43 years.

If you had to guess at the current miles, what would it be? Because 250k spread out over 43 years isn't a lot but 250k of Canadian daily miles is.

Probably 265-275k miles.  only about 60,000 on the rebuilt poly-head engine.  Which is very much like a hemi but without the coolness or street cred.

That seems like a whole lot for a 70s sedan from before rustproofing was all that effective. It might not be the most crazy here where structural rust is just a conspiracy but that’s mighty impressive for what it is. And most even here would have been retired with 1/3 of those miles. It's easy to forget just how much longer modern cars last.

By the way, what’s the story behind the Corvair?

Corvair was bought in ‘barn’ condition in Santa Fe New Mexico. I was tired of dealing with rust. Flew down with wrenches, bailing wire and sandpaper, got it registere d and drove it across 6 states and over the rockies and a blizzard in Denver with next to no brakes. Vaporlocked at the border and US border patrol actually pushed me into Canada. Paid tax and did paperwork, Hit a deer in the first 5 minutes in Canada. Wrecked rather badly, difficult car to repair. That’s the short version of that story.

But at least I got to drive my project car 2,200 miles before I wrecked it.

The c ar I chopped up to make this happen had only 60k miles and was parked by 1974
