It’s looking like the camping spot I found northwes t (fixed)  of Fort Collins is now on fire. While there I talked with some hikers who lived nearby. They wanted to make sure I wasn’t lighting any fires, which I was not.

We chatted for a bit, and they told me the area had been accidentally set aflame a year or so ago when a controlled burn got out of hand. Their insurance company dropped their fire insurance after that. Said they were very good about building defensible space around their home, but the land across the street was national forest and not being managed correctly. I’m hoping their homes alright.

More east, less north, in the Roosevelt NF, out of the plains and into the mountains.

Think you mean west, yes? East is Kansas and Nebraska. No mountains out east.

I’m really not trying to be an ass.... but I think you mean NorthWEST, right? Up the Cache LaPoudre drainage west of town, really all the way to Red Feather Lakes, is gorgeous. Anything east of Fort Collins, Windsor, east of Greeley, out to Sterling and beyond is pretty treeless.

Just checking, it looks like a big fire west of Fort Collins up in the Roosevelt Nat Forest.  Must be the one you’re thinking of right?

Used to work for HP on that Fort Collins site in a former life, so know the area pretty well.

lol, as a native of Denver and someone who has spent a fair amt of time NW of FC i was confused for a second. The Never Summer Wilderness and State Forest State Park (dumbest fucking name ever) are some of my favorite parts of C olorado.

We camped down past the lake at Cameron Peak 3 years ago, all gone now ......... T he dead spruce were a tinderbox waiting to go up in that area, well over 50% were dead standing trees.
