So I just drove the 4Runner 550 miles.

It miraculously didn’t break, and even more miraculous is that the odometer has worked for almost the entire year, so it’s rolled over another 1000 miles twice. To add to the miracle, out of the 4 family vehicles taken on this drive, it’s the only one that didn’t break... Yeah, we had the Azera back for a day, and broke down 2 hours into the drive , the LS430 either has a blown shock or rack(though it’s the one that got drove 550 miles back), and the Vibe almost lost a spoiler and burned enough oil to not register on the dipstick.

Those are such good looking trucks. And and an adorable pup too. I’m surprised that a Vibe burned that much oil. What is wrong with it?

It’s a smaller Toyota 4-cylinder from the 2000's.

I have had shockingly little experience with 2000s Toyota 4 pots. Their V8s are great, that I do know.

We’ve honestly had horrific luck with Toyotas.

Basically my only experience with a Toyota is my dad’s 300k mile 02 Tundra TRD . Only major repair was a radiator and it has never really broken down.

My 4Runner has been... The GTI may have been more reliable. The Vibe has been fine, it just burns oil. The LS430 freak accident grenaded the engine.

I’ve been in the car when two different engines bricked themselves and it always had a few minutes warning. I can’t remember but I think both were overheating related. It’s still always unexpected as you never quite anticipate total engine failure. Maybe a dead battery or at worst a timing catastrophe but never just a total lock up.

This was fine, then plastic tab falls off timing cover, engine jumps time, engine no longer engine.

Goodbye valves, you weren't appreciated in your own time. My brothers V6 Mazda6 went out with something similar except it more prolonged than you would expect. Like a week of the timing being off but not off enough to bend the valves. The shop fixed it but then it would skip a tooth or something again and again.

If your vibe has a 1zz from 00-02 then that oil issue will never go away. The piston cooling channels are too narrow and impossible to unclog without some wrenching. Otherwise the engine is great. I dropped in a 2zz with revised intake/exhaust - went from 114whp to about 200whp on factory ECU.

Nah, it’s a 2.4.

Love it. Took my ‘97 LX450 on a 500 mile round-tripper the other weekend and it handled it like a (13 MPG) champ!

2.4L is small to you? What’s a normal size 4 cylinder? It’s nuts that the 2.4 also had an oil burning issue as soon as 60k in.

Well, Toyota also has  a 2.7.
