Kinja'd!!!

Working out nearly final details on a change of employment today that will involve a move 2000 miles away to the Bay Area and I am having a hard time containing my excitement!

That’s why I’m telling Oppo! None of you folks know anyone where I work so I can shout it at the rooftops here!

Also shit man - I need to sell a lot of things... Does anyone want a 50 year old Motorcycle, 30 year old Japanese pickup or 40 year old Scout II? Oppo discounts apply.

Things aren’t set in stone but like 99% at this point with a start date of October 12th!

Edited to add pics of vehicles on the chopping block as multiple folks requested . They’re all either worse than something I could buy on the west coast or missing emissions equipment making it likely they’ll never pass out there.

1979 Scout II Traveler: 345 V8, Auto, 4x4

Better shape than most unrestored Scouts but has bad rust in rockers and needs help to be a driver. It runs and moves, but that’s about it now without more work than I want to put into it.

Kinja'd!!!

1990 Mazda B2600i: 5 Speed, 4x4

Decent shape knockaround pickup. Done a major tune up to it and it runs pretty well but it’s 30 years old with something like 220k miles so it’s a beater truck. Rust, but has a few years life left in it before she needs to be retired.

Kinja'd!!!

1971 Honda CB500 Four

This is a tough one to decide to sell but I think I’m there. I’ve written about it a few times and love this bike, but I have a new bike and it isn’t practical to move across the country. She runs and drives but still needs work. I just did a bunch of electric repairs and rebuilt the carbs but it’s 50 years old so there are things that need more love and more will break.

Kinja'd!!!

If anyone is serious about these let me know either in the comments or at wonkothesanest@gmail.com.  Oh I’m about a half hour south of St Louis.

Congrats! Good luck on the logisitics, I moved Detroit to central coast of CA 2 years ago, and pulled the trigger last week to move my career from San Diego to Florida. Getting way too used to cross country moves.

Congrats! You don’t know how much I’d like to depart MO and return home to SoCal...

Keep me in mind if you’ve got any tech junk you need to purge before your move. Also remember that I've been out of work since last December...

This is so awesome, congrats! I know it’s been a long time coming for you. I know there are a few Bay Area oppos, and I lived and worked down there for quite a while (lived everywhere from Santa Cruz up the peninsula to SF) for any questions you may have.

Obviously a crazy time in the bay right now but hopefully things would have calmed down by the time you make it out there - any estimates on when you’d be moving the family and starting?

I highly recommend PODS to move the bulk of things, Uhaul truck gets really expensive fast once you count for mileage charges and fuel. We sent our POD and then loaded ~2 weeks of supplies in our cars (wife and I) to survive on while the POD was in transit. Unfortunately for us our POD got delayed (thankful for the clothes, air mattress, etc we packed) but you can dispute a late POD and get a significant price reduction.

Our in state move we hired movers for about the same price as a POD would have been.

I won’t be passing through Indy, already west of there in St Louis.  I did think of you when selling it, it’s a project for sure though.

Thanks for the congrats! Yeah this has been a j ourney, I would have been out there in April save the pandemic causing the company I was going to start at to stop all hiring.

I will likely lean on Oppos out there for advice as I get settled and figure out the area.

The start date right now is October 12th so a month away. I’ll probably go first then the Mrs follow me a couple weeks after.

The company is going to pay for the move so I think we’ll hire movers.  Which I’ve not done before, only ever moved via uhal and dragging my own shit with a trailer.

I appreciate it- it is a big change but should be awesome.

I’m tired of the midwest and ready to leave.  It’s cheap but other than that is pretty meh to terrible on a lot of fronts.

A new adventure - that’s a good thing. I’ve been here eight years now and it has been a learning experience, good and bad. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery and to see how other parts of the country/world live. It was quite entertaining to watch my mother experience life here in MO during winter when she came out to take care of me after my cancer surgery last year. She’s lived in California her entire life and there was so much out here that was different from what she was used to. There was almost a childlike wonder to some simple things, like a snowstorm.

I just shot you an email re: the CB500 . Respond when you have time.

I believe it’s only for 75 and older cars. Anything pre-carb gets a pass.

These also have more rust than what you could get out there.

The bike could be ridden out there no problem as it’s exempt for emissions , but I’m just having trouble justifying moving 2 bikes.

Nice. San Jose is much derided for being really sterile but based on objective measures it’s one of the nicest cities in the US. Depending on how strict and “normal” (9-5) your work schedule is you’re probably gonna wanna live very close to work since traffic down there definitely gets nasty and it’s not like it gets much cheaper as you look further away. In fact, it gets more expensive as you go north on the peninsula.

I used to work right by the SJ airport and actually commuted down from San Francisco for much of that time  but that was only doable because I had flexible hours and work from home, so I could pretty much always avoid rush hour.

Makes sense, thanks for the advice.

For now it’ll probably be San Jose or Fremont we live in. Long term this gig will definitely require some office work, some remote and some off-s ite work. Google is a big client of theirs that I know I’ll be working with.

When I was going to be working downtown SF (job that pandemic nixed) we were looking at either Richmond or Vallejo but they’re a long ass way away from San Jose.

Nice! Good luck with the packing...it’s no fun but the end result will be worth it. And a good opportunity to get rid of things you don’t need (which will come in handy given how much more expensive space is on the other end).
