Because 2020 has become a hellscape, and because the year isn’t over, preparing for a volcano eruption isn’t the worst way to spend your time.
Petrone even found a glassy piece of brain-matter in the skull of one Herculaneum victim, suggesting the cloud heated this person’s brain so quickly it vitrified. Nevertheless, you can avoid vitrification if you follow these instructions carefully.

I would say “run directly into the lava” but I hear that is neither quick nor painless so... heh.

What I find staggering is that the whole area, except on the NE side of the volcano is significantly built up:
There would presumably be more warning of an eruption today, but holy shit there are a lot of people living in close proximity to a mountain famous for obliterating cities. Ancient Pompeii was ~5.75 miles from the center of the volcano, downtown Naples is only ~8.4 miles, and huge portions of the metro area are much closer.
Makes a neat backdrop though:

I went to this exhibit when it was here in salt lake and got to see this video in the special rumbly theater. It’ s scary but not as scary as what happens when the screen lifts up and you walk into the room where you see the actual molds of people and animals that were flash burned then entombed.
Pompeii was actually pretty amazing in its advancement. They had hydronic whole building heat, they had hot running water, they had brass plumbing valves that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury home today and their metalwork was stunning.
Much like a nuclear disaster though, I’ m pretty sure I would just walk outside and let the heat wave take me rather than attempt to flee and be mowed down. Granted if I can get enough warning...im taking that option.

In 2020 Mt Rainier coming back to life would be par for the course.

The thing about the recommendation is that it wouldn’t always be the right move. South would have been the logical choice, as nobody could have predicted with certainty at the time (aside from wind direction, which still could have changed) that it would land on Pompeii instead of Naples. If you’re one of those wealthy people there, you’d probably want to hitch up your chariot and head south as fast as the horse can pull you.
The spot where the vitrified brain came from was along that route ; you’d have needed to be crazy to head to a city about the same distance from the volcano as your city is. I would have bet on Salerno or Sorrento being a better choice. Salerno being particularly good because you could put a mountain between you and the volcano, and likely even safer behind the mountains to the south near the coast...
