Installed my craigslist spec garage heater last weekend
Works like a charm, perfect burn pattern, got everything installed up to code
The serial number reveals it was manufactured in December 1979
Up next: Insulating!

Sweet. If I had a heated garage, I might just move in there.

Looks exactly like the ones in my elementary school cafeteria. Probably still in use today.

Trivia Time: Reznor heaters like that were invented by George Reznor. His Great Grandson is Trent Reznor, also known as Nine-Inch Nails.
Think of that while you stand in a blast of hot air this winter.

That’s exactly what all my chemicals and stuff did in the garage last winter. Hardened up.
My hydrostat tractor had some water contamination and the return to the hydro pump literally froze and had to be melted every time I wanted to blow snow.

Kink in the gas line is triggering my OCD. (Reality - if everything is working, leave it alone).
You’re lucky - I’d like heat in my shop but I’d have to run a few hundred feet of gas line to it. Did you plumb the gas or contract it out?

Oh that’s from earlier, that’s a kink in the 110V line where I added another outlet for a short run to the heater.
Did the gas up myself, 60' of 5/8ths L-copper pipe from my tree to the furnace

You are adapting quite well. Going for a new furnace would’ve been an incalculable mistake.

The Reznor in my garage just got a little cooler. Even if this isn’t true I am going to pretend it is.

Very nice! I have a similar (newer) Reznor in my garage and it’s one of the best things I’ve done to the house/garage. Any particular reason you went with copper for the gas line as opposed to black pipe?

I’ll stand behind this Fake News-- which (twist ending!) is actually true.

The rest of the house was copper already so it blended in better :D
Also I had some interesting corners and runs and didn’t want to deal with anything with fittings behind drywall that could leak

Not too familiar with these units, but judging by its age I expect that whatever it lacks in efficiency, it probably makes up for in simplicity, quality, reliability,
and serviceability.

I don’t know if the labeling has changed in more recent years, but BTU’s out / BTU’s in on the label = 80%, which is pretty solid. I’ve seen new ones that are 82% or so, and old ones that are 77%, so I feel like it’s a decent efficiency. Only way to get into the 90's seems to be using a HVAC furnace and ducting.
And yes it’s stupid simple which is lovely, and the burners haven’t rotted out in 40 years, nor have the casing or exchangers.
