Looks (and smells) worse in person

Sometimes I wonder how people take such poor care of their vehicles. I have to take this recently traded 2020 Equinox to one of my other stores tomorrow and couldn’t believe how gross it was. Grime, crumbs, cigarettes ashes everywhere. The windshield & windows had a slight haze from smoking in the vehicle. Yuck.

Kinja'd!!!

Might be silly to clean a vehicle that’s going to be professionally detailed but figured since I have to be in it for 4 hours tomorrow, I’d give it a touch up. Much better. Took me all of 20 mins. People are gross and lazy, I needed to rant.

I don’t know how people can smoke in cars they intend to one day sell again.

It’s a bitch for us to sell previously smoked vehicles even with most of the smell gone. I just feel bad knowing there was two young kids in this one.

Griminals!

The 4th gen Maxima I used to have was loaded with cigarettes. Underneath both front seats was full of cigarettes and empty water bottles

Did you at least play with the helicopter things in the cup holder? :p

I remember taking a ride to go get lunch with a coworker once, he was a GM retiree and always had Cadillacs under the employee pricing program, he was also a massive chain smoker. We got a few feet out of the parking lot, and he went “God damn it, can’t see shit”, took out a handkerchief, and wiped a brown film off the inside of the windshield. Thing of it was, the staining was so even throughout the interior of the car that you really couldn’t tell, you’d have had to park a clean CTS next to it to see the contrast.

Also remember watching the guy driving a tractor when his pipe burned out - took it out of his mouth, put in a cigarette, lit it, repacked the pipe, snuffed out the cigarette, put the pipe back in and relit it, all in one fluid motion without stopping the tractor or taking more than one hand off the wheel. Don’t know how he did that, also don’t know how he managed to get a permanent cigarette smell stuck on his open air golf cart with plastic seats.

People can be so disgusting in cars.

I get that people don’t often have time to clean their cars , but how did they get it so dirty in the first place!?

Trust me I get that. My  personal car needs a good interior detail but it’s just dust and dirt on the floors, nothing too bad like this.

Right now I have some sand from last week’s beach trip on my floor mats, and a small drop of dried sticky red bull on the center console, and I thought I was the grossest human to ever be in a car.

(Though some of the shit I’ve seen in junkyards....hooooo boy)

Exactly. I’m not one of those who expects a car to be spotless, heck my personal car needs a good cleaning after a few road trips, but this..is just neglect.

What amazes me was this was a 1 year old car with less than 20k miles.

I don’t consider myself a germophobe, but when I rent a car, I’ll spend 5-10 minutes wiping down the interior, cleaning the glass, etc. And in my DD, I wipe down the wheel/switchgear weekly, along with dusting the dash etc.  Also no eating in the car, so little real mess. Maybe a little OCD, but it’s worth it to always be in a clean car.

I smoked for 20 years and finally quit 6 years ago. I used to light one every time I would get in my car. I never really thought my cars stunk, I always had my window open when I would smoke. Then 6 years ago I had my first child. And don’t miss that crap one bit. Even when I smoked i found that other smokers sta nk. I know now I probably stank too.

It’s incredible how long  my windshield stays clean now, but the kids windows are a different story....

I was kind of astonished when I used my window towel, it had a light yellow/brown film to it. I’ve detailed cars with this towel plenty of times and never saw that. Gross. Especially given this car isn’t even 1 year old.

That’s wild. One of those shake your head while laughing moments I bet

Nice work on kicking the habit. my condolences and sympathies on never having a clean car again due to kids.

Reminds me of when I was in college and did a lot of climbing and biking and kept my gear in the car because I would go whenever I could. I kinda knew it stunk but I must have gotten used to it. Looking back now I’ m amazed there wasn’t a literal  green stink cloud that would billow out each time I opened the door.

Good on you for quitting. I’m trying to get one of my best car buddies to quit as he struggles stopping and starting again. He knows he needs to.

I’ve detailed a lot of cars but guess I never one that was smoked it. So it shocked me a bit to see how affected the windows were

I’m about the same. I don’t mind a little mess, which my personal car is usually in, but over that I need it cleaned up. I saw some gross cars working for Enterprise in college but this was gross knowing someone lived in it day in and day out.

We rented a condo we owned up until a few years ago, the people said they didn’t smoke and the rules for the community as well as our rules didn’t allow for it. However, whenever we went over there to check on things and get the rent they always had incense burning. When we went to go in and clean the place after they moved out the walls were filthy with black smoke, in every room. We cleaned for hours, they were pissed when they didn’t get their deposit back and threatened to sue me.

I’ve never traded in a car but if I did it would be filthy as shit. Not deliberately but I don’t get an extra dollar in trade for one that’s regularly washed and waxed with all records and no crumbs. If I’m taking the convenience of trade, believe you me I’m taking ALL  the convenience.

I once had to scrub the very tall (12 ft) walls in my old dispatch office at LAX to get rid of nicotine stains caused by the overnight dispatcher that wasn’t supposed to be smoking in the office. The owner of the company was coming over from France and my boss wanted the place sparkling clean. Day after day of noxious chemicals scrubbing the yellow/brown haze off of the white walls, all the while having to listen to my co-workers bitch and complain endlessly about the smell. They weren’t willing to help with the cleaning, but were all to happy to whine about it for 10-12 hours/day...

I used to hand wash cars when I was 16. I remember washing a 90s Buick road master wagon. I open the door to bring it in the garage to clean it and the first thing you see is every ashtray is overflowing. Clean the outside then the stinky inside. I had to clean every window about 4 times to get them looking clean. Lots of windows on those wagons even one on the roof.

My 2015 that I’ve never cleaned the inside of aside from a quick shake of the floor mats and the occasional car wash vacuum (maybe twice since I’ve owned it) is cleaner than this... I don’t think I’ve ever even wiped down the center console.

I haven't ever cleaned ash out but I did scrub a lot of nicotine stains out of my car when I bought it. It was the ionization machine that made the real difference.
