The Alpharetta police clocked a motorcycle doing 178, at that speed he was probably still being passed by a barely running death trap.

I was in Roswell this past weekend visiting my parents and it does seem like everyone is driving faster than normal.

I use to cruise to work in the left lane doing 80 82 mph. I get run over doing that now. 90 to 95 seems normal on the commute in now.

During a commute?! Damn, if anything goes wrong for a microsecond among all those untrained, barely paying attention drivers texting...

I wonder if Atlanta police got him or he was just seeing what he could do for a minute or two and then got off the freeway.

Bet you they didn’t, he probably got off the freeway or kept going at that speed.

Somehow I knew it was n ortheast of Atlanta, though I have never been there. Based on the people I knew that lived out there 15-20 years ago, I got the sense that the region around Lake Lanier was a wealthy exurb that blended redneck with high incomes.

yah, doing 178 for an extended time is asking to get caught with prison.
When I was younger and stupider, I did 140 for quite a while on an empty Ohio turnpike. I was lucky. Now I’m older with more fear.

This is why a turbo Busa is a good first bike - efficient travel.
People sure drive a lot faster around Atlanta than Seattle. I remember a few years ago being on some little connecting highway still posted at 55, I was going 75 and being constantly passed. Around here, if you go 8 over you’re in the top 10% of speeders.

Definitely the most consistently fast drivers. When I was in NY last year, it seemed that there were people doing either doing 30 over or 10 under, with no middle ground.

I encounter a lunatic every time I jump on any of the highways within 25 miles of Atlanta.

Put Chicago in there too. While living there (3 years ago-ish) I was extremely excited to find they al l drive 10-30 over. I can’t imagine what it is now.
Even people in Minneapolis/St Paul are hauling ass during commuting times now. I used to be the fastest car on the road, now I’m solidly mid-pack.

In my exact area it seems 90% are from 10 under to 5 over. A few real speeders, but even going 10 over (around where I like to cruise) can be a challenge. Traffic volumes are sometimes at play, but often timid slowpokes and lane discipline make things more fun.

I remember driving in Chicago a couple years ago. Set it for 15 over and was passed by half the cars on the road. Fine with me. I’m more into lane discipline than egregious speed.
Milwaukee was like Chicago on crack - all of the speed, none of the wherewithal .

The article states that both this rider and another one that were tagged at over 170 mph were not chased.
Thus, the best way to avoid a speeding ticket is to go over 170 mph so the cops just give up and don’t bother chasing you. Literally nothing can go wrong with this.

This is a correct take.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find that most Oppos ahem . . .flirted with disaster in their youth but lived long enough to get smart.
