When we left the POS Camaro the engine was torn down to the long block and the heads were checked by a machine shop and found to be fine. I finished reassembling everything yesterday and after a few check, and a lot of coolant, today it was time to start it.

I splashed some gas in the carb, hit the key, and for some reason it started. I was caught off guard by that development. I thought I’d be messing with the timing for a bit. After letting it warm up I got the timing light out to set the idle speed and timing and, because I’m a fucking genius, didn’t notice the trigger wire laying in the header tube. Sigh. Anyway, after a bit of soldering I got that working again found the base timing was a bit off, 32 instead of 12, and now it almost sounds like a car. Next is to put a few heat cycles in to it and see if the coolant stays in the radiator or if it migrates to the oil again.

Cars are fun.

My wrenching status:

Good:

- New engine air filter installed, air box vacuumed

Bad:

-Mysterious coolant loss has returned for the first time in two an a half years (shop said they found a crack in the radiator tank, which is a thing on these, but I’ve ignored it since I haven’t been losing coola nt)

-Liquid on air charge pipe near connection. But there shouldn’t be any coolant in there to leak. Also seems more like oil than coolant. I don’t think there should be oil leaking out of the air charge pipe either?

Not done:

- Replace broken window switch. Got a replacement switch (also a whole replacement panel, but it’s a bit sun faded, so I’d like to see if I can just do the button)

-Horns! One doesn’t work, but I need to test to see which it is. Grabbed some junkyard horns that hopefully can replace the bad one, assuming it’s an issue with the horn rather than the wiring. If it is the wiring, I suspect I’m too lazy to fix it.

In any event, replacing the radiator and/or various hoses is more wrenching than I want to attempt at the moment, so I guess it’s going to the shop.

The mysterious leaks suck. No leak is a joy but they’re  so much easier to deal with when you know where things are coming from and going to. I’m definitely done wrenching for now because it’s 90-something in the garage, and my wife is taking me out for a birthday dinner. I will choose steak and alcohol over sweating my ass off every time.

This is good OPPO that I live for.

It really shocked me. The absolute best that I hoped for was just messing with the timing for a while before it would fire and run.  The worst involved a lot of very loud noises.
