Went for a drive today. Saw some not great examples of great cars, an engineering marvel too.

Saw a friend, he told me about a scrap yard that is filled with old cars. So I went.

I started with an Isuzu Impulse, this was a good sign,

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Not one, but 4 Land Cruisers where here. The Silver & Brown ones where Diesel.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

A Previa & lots of hub caps.

Kinja'd!!!

A Plymouth Laser too. A few AW11s, a 944, some FB RX7's, & goes on.

Kinja'd!!!

Then for the engineering nerds, get ready. A Lift Lock for boats that was started in 1886, opened in 1904. It works using no external power, just gravity & water displacement. 141ft long, 33ft wide, & a fall of 65ft. It was the 1st lock to be built with concrete, & the (then) largest non-reinforced concrete structure in the world.

I’ll let wiki explain it, I’m not an engineer.

those cruisers will still be worth a few dollars down here.

Holy hydraulic cylinder! I love that.

Direct action is the, errrr, most  direct action I suppose. Simple design, but execution takes some real work.

Fascinating stuff. What’s this?

Kinja'd!!!

There is some cool stuff there. Like the RX7 behind it.

And way more Land Cruisers than you would expect. So many!

You know when you see a decrepitpid example of a car you forget is actually old? That’s me with that CRV.

Aside from a bit of rust (and not having its wheel), that Previa doesn’t look too far gone. Interesting that it has a 4WD badge, I thought those were all All Trac branded. Maybe Canada got something different? Or maybe I’m just ignorant (mine was RWD).

I went to a junkyard today, but nothing too interesting there. An old Trooper II, a ‘70s Volvo, stuff like that. And a real shortage of what I was looking for, though I eventually got most of it. They need to refresh their inventory, their P2 Volvos were all really picked over.

I edited it. It uses no external power, just gravity. It’s a 7.5ft diameter  ram. Due to an election at the time (1886) the construction go approved with no drawings.

You could walk the same section 3 times & see something new each time. I still missed lots.

Probably , Canada gets all sorts of weird trims & options.

That’s even more clever! The two tubs must be hydraulically linked. (I suppose I could go read the wiki.)

It works along the lines of one side goes down & the other side goes up. That’s the extent of my engineering knowledge. For it’s time it’s really amazing  since they did not have tech they would have had now.

Very cool! I LOVE exploring around old salvage yards...I find it sortof calming, as weird as that sounds! Is that an RX-7 behind that Isuzu...?

I found it calming  too. It was one of many RX7s.

It’s a 1988 Isuzu Impulse, handling by Lotus they always said.

Is that a Raider or Montero behind the Isuzu Impulse?

It’s an Isuzu Impulse from the late 80s. It’s RWD. Check this out:

That ad is delightfully absurd but did Joe Isuzu really well many cars?

Huh, pretty obscure old thing then. Dogisbadob said it is RWD so that actually looks like a hoot.
