So beautiful!
I used to have a nice Marantz reciever and tape deck that traveled with me to college and when I finished there I didn’t have room for it so I gave it to a younger brother and it eventually ended up getting thrown away.
Man do I wish I found room for that in my stuff all those years ago.

My parents actually still have a Marantz receiver that dates back to the 70s, which they bought new. Pootling around google image search, the closest match to the recollection in my head is this 2220B.
They don’t use it often, and the main speakers it’s hooked up to are probably totally decayed now, but it’s all still in their built-in stereo cabinet, and the receiver is wired up to a multi-room switch that can send sound to pairs of Realistic Minimus 7 indoor/ outdoor speakers (a longtime Radio Shack standby!) , one black pair in the screened-in porch and one white pair on top of their piano that nobody in my house ever learned to play but my mom insisted on buying as an expensive decoration in the hopes that maybe one of us kids would get interested.

Looks kinda like the one my dad had when I was a little Skyfire, though I’m pretty sure it wasn’t that nice.

My brother had a nice Marantz quad receiver back in the day. No idea what happened to it. Digital stuff sucks. Give me cool lights and an FM dial any day.

The biggest problem these days it would seem is figuring out how to connect modern stuff to that legacy system. I’m sure there are RCA adaptors and all that. But still.

Old sc h ool is where it’s at for audio.
Also kinda weird that you went out to a tenth of a penny on cost ;-)

I have a Qu
ad 33/303 setup that I bought new. I have had to change it between 240V and 120V a few times, but it is still working nicely.

That dial wheel was just so amazing to adjust . You could move that think like a safe cracker and dial in exactly what you wanted and pick up stations well outside of normal range.
I could pickup stations from 250 miles away if I was really careful and did some antennae aiming.
My house came with an old analog Panasonic wired in the garage and while it looks good the quality of it wasn’t great living a lot of its life in a garage. First I figured it was extremely shoddy speaker wiring but I fixed that and it still sounds bad so she likely needs cracked open, cleaned and fixed. Not sure I’m up to that though.

They’re not big home theater types. At one point in the past we did have it hooked up to the output from a succession of tube TVs but I doubt they bothered to hook it up to the flatscreen that’s there now. They’ve moved on to Sonos speakers in other parts of the house for listening to music. The old stuff is just kinda chillin.

Was always on the lookout for a Marantz turntable back in the day. Wound up with the Denon I still have.

I’ve got a slightly less powerful version (2216B) that I to drive some late 80s KEF speakers. All hooked up through 3,5mm out from TV to RCA adapter and speakers just old skool regular wires etc. Looks awesome and still sounds great as well.

Fried the output transistors. Twice. Thing was only about 20W/channel anyhow. Did this Marrantz stuff even sound all that great? This whole thread triggers my PTSD.

My trumpet teacher was fond of quoting his teacher (we’re talking 1930s here) who said, “I never knew a bad player who, when given a good instrument, suddenly became a good player. Likewise, I never knew a good player who, when given a bad instrument, suddenly became a bad player. It’s 90% the man.”

In my teens, a friend’s older brother had a high end Marantz components system. We were not allowed to touch it.
Beatings were threatened, and we knew he meant it.

I stereo shop out at Tidewater Drive. It’s where Dad bought the Mission speakers (which have not stood the test of time) and the Thorens turntable.

I still have a 2240B that’s in pretty good shape except for a little scratchiness in the volume pot. I’ve got a tube of DeOxit that should, in theory, getting it sounding good again, the tech I talked to said just to flood that pot with this stuff. I bought this receiver off eBay about 20 years ago as a replacement for the one that my late father purchased new back in ‘74. I still remember going to the store with him to buy it, back in the day when independent stereo shops were a thing. Stereo Mart in Anaheim California was the location. That receiver and a few other things were in the garage when my parents were having some remodeling done, and it was stolen by the slack-ass PoS contractors. It was bad enough to lose that awesome receiver, but to add insult to injury it had the wood case as well. Argh.
Not as easy to steal were the speakers, which I still have. Tannoy Orbitus-1s that my stepfather purchased new back in 1968. I have refinished one and need to do the other. There is a little damage from people setting their drinks on top and leaving rings. THESE ARE MADE WITH REAL WOOD AND CAN BE DAMAGED BY DOING THAT! Sorry - I’m still ticked at people’s carelessness.
Years ago someone in Japan paid $2,500 for a pair of these. I haven’t checked lately to see if the value has changed, but I’d imagine that there’s still demand for awesome-looking vintage audio, especially when it’s complete with the original sales literature.
I just found this pin on Etsy for $15. It seems a little pricey, but it sure is cool

That’s amazing. I love that vintage stuff, but maybe it’s just because I’m old. I have a rather pedestrian Kenwood receiver from the late 80s that I just can’t bring myself to get rid of.

Yes. Several evolutions of both technologies and retail establishments have come and gone since Sound Shop and places like it existed. The Marantz receiver and the Polk Audio speakers took every penny I had and when I got it home all I had was a radio. K-94, FM-99.
