I once thought that I was invincible . My arthritis reminds me everyday that I was not.

Likewise, though I technically don’t have arthritis (yet). I’m not quite 30 and several years ago tweaked my knee landing a jump badly while skiing, then finished messing it up playing ball hockey later that same week. I can’t ski anymore and ball sports are risky so I mostly avoid them aside from some casual play and a bit of rec league volleyball. I shouldn’t be this broken at my age. :<

Becaus e I am twice your age, I will give you some advice concerning the knees. Get them taken care of, and don’t think they will get better on their own.
My first major knee issue started from being burned, which became infected, about 70% of the leg initially. Then spread to other leg. Nearly had to have an amputation, infection lasted nearly 6 months, but doctors were able to save it. The infection dissolved the knee joint.
This didn’t stop me from doing all my usual daily work, or my favorite activities. It just put me in tremendous pain afterwards and caused to favor the knee and take fist fulls of ibuprofe n and sometimes prescription pain killers.
After decades of favoring the bad knee, the other knee developed lots of pain too. It had been doing all the hard work, and now was nearly as bad as the other. One evening, after clearing the snow from the driveway, I took my dog for his evening walk. The road had some snow covered ice, and I was wearing tr action devices on my boots. I slipped and fell, the once good knee made a hell of a popping sound, and I knew I was in trouble. I was on crutches for weeks and never went to doctor.
Anyway, both my knees are junk now. I have limited range of motion in the knee injured from the fall, can’t bend as much as does not go fully straight. I did go to physical therapy this year, pre- pandemic, after falling gently and losing use of the leg again. I asked if they thought it would be possible that I regain range of motion, the answer was basically “No, not after this many years”.
This in on top of countless other injuries, to feet, hands, neck, shoulders, spine, head and more.
Get your knees looked at. If you want to have some sort of normal activity in your life, you’ll want use of your legs. If I knew then , what it would be like now, I’d be at the doctor’s office ASAP.

Having read your advice, I feel like quite the wuss for my griping above. I can and do consider myself lucky that I have a full range of motion in the affected knee and that it is strong enough to support my work/life as a farmer. T hankfully, I work without pain daily and can likewise enjoy hobbies like hiking, mountain biking, etc. pain free. It’s just ball sports and anything that can cause twisting motions in the knee that I have to be careful of. I can play casually but if I allow myself to get competitive it will result in injury.
After an expansion of the farm a couple of years ago we were understaffed for about a year and a half, to the point that I didn’t even have time to get the knee looked at. Now that we are fully staffed, I can, theoretically, take some time away to have surgery done if necessary. Unfortunately and maybe somewhat amusingly, 2 of my siblings have done just that for knee injuries (we’re all rather tall and susceptible to such things).
The plan is to (effectively) demand a proper analysis of my knee from my doctor the next time I tweak it. It’s been good for a good while now (knock on wood) but I won’t settle for a hyperextended ligament diagnosis and anti- inflammatory prescription again - I’ll have him schedule me in for an MRI/CT scan and do what’s necessary based on that information.
I appreciate your advise, and will get the knee properly addressed ASAP.

If I am good for anything, it is to be used as an example of what not to do.
Take care of yourself, so you don’t have to depend on o thers to do so for you later in life. Seriously, two weeks ago I had to have someone tie my shoes for me.......
