Archery season opens Saturday and I have not been shooting much.

These are sequential from first group to last. Yeah my 20 yard accuracy needs some work. If I get it in the dark green area that’s a kill shot...

I’ve thought about getting into archery! An y suggestions for a non-crap starter bow that won’t murder my bank account? I imagine I’d go compound...?

Bow shooting is one of those skills that definitely requires maintenance and practice.

Mine got pulled out a few weeks ago and was still decent, but not great.

I gave up shooting a recurve a few years ago as I didn’t have the time to spend keeping up that skill and moved to a compound.

Your aim gets better when you get hungrier.

You’re shooting looks fine! I’ve had days when I was doing well to hit the target.

Archery is a lot of fun when you have the space to practice safely. I took both of our kids to an after-school archery program. The head instructor was a former Olympian. While my son wasn’t particularly interested, my daughter really took to it. This was on her first day shooting at 10 yards.

Kinja'd!!!

That’s without a peep sight!

They had another site set up for adults who wanted to shoot. I hadn’t shot in 30 years, but it didn’t take long for me to get back into the swing of things! I’m not sure what round this was, buy we were shooting at 30 yards. Again, no peep sight.

I really want to move to a place where we can set up a decent, safe range. Every place we can go to shoot is at least half an hour drive away.

If you’re just getting started, go to an archery store with a range and try out a few bows. The kind of bow you buy depends on what you want to do with it. For target shooting, a recurve is fine. Don’t get too heavy of a pull. You don’t need it for targets. The more shots you can make in a single session, the faster your skills will improve. You will get tired faster with a heavy draw.

If you want to hunt, it’s easier with a compound bow since you can hold the draw longer as you wait for the perfect shot. Target shooting with a heavy-draw compound bow is a pain because the arrows embed deeply into the target and can be a pain to remove.

It’s a good idea to join an archery club so you can get some instruction on the right way to shoot. There are lots of things to do wrong, some of which can hurt you.

Not sure if there are any clubs for it around here, but I’ll check! I’d just be doing target shooting, likely. :)

Your daughter is awesome!

Right now we have room that I can shoot in the back yard and that’s definitely nice .

I could shoot up to 40 yards on my property so I have no excuse. The last deer I shot was probably 15 yard away. I’m also shooting with my now turned down to 45 lbs or so. It seems to shoot better over 50 lbs but then I can’t shoot as many arrows before my arms give out pulling 50-60 lbs.

IMO the only reason to get a compound bow is for hunting or competing target shooting in select classes. I have a PSE compound bow that I use for hunting deer and turkeys. It shoots 300+ FPS at 55-60 lbs.

This is a PSE compound bow. Cross bows are illegal for archery hunting in Montana.

I actually hit an arrow a few years ago, it happens. But at $7/arrow I try to not make it a habit.

Forgive me...I just now realized I am an idiot. I never meant a compound bow, I was using the wrong word...I MEANT composite bow in the form of a recurve bow, but was getting compound and composite mixed up in my head because of stupidity :P

The limbs of  all new bows are composite/carbon fiber now. My PSE was around a $400 bow and it has composite limbs and the risers (main static body) is aluminum. It’s pretty light and is on the low end of hunting bows. You can spend thousands if you want.

Captain O’Hagan: Bulletproof cup, huh? I invented this gag, Rabbit. Only in my day, the rookie got naked.
[fires through the window, accidentally shooting out the glass]
Captain O’Hagan: And we also used blanks. You’re a sick motherf* cker, Mac.
Mac: Thanks, Chief!

Priceless Classic!
