I broke a cardinal sin of car- dom, I sold a car to friend. I suspect at some point, things will be rocky. The Mrs has wanted out her CX-5 for some time and an older friend of ours was looking for her “last car” to replace her Toyota Matrix. She was looking in to the CX-5 pretty seriously, but she was incredibly anxious about going to a dealership. When we talked to her about buying the Mazda she was delighted about the idea! Additionally, we worked in me taking her car on trade in the deal. An aside, I am typically not good at finding equity for both sides in a negotiation, so this took some work for me to find a fair number where all came out equal/even.

So now we are CX-5 free and I have an automatic 2006 Toyota Matrix with 112,000 miles to sell. It should be a nice little project for me . It’s overall extremely clean and could be sold as it sits currently. I am replacing the rear passenger door handle as it’s hanging on by a thread. I’ve also ordered a bluetooth adapter for the OEM headunit. It’s not a perfect solution, but I absolutely hate the look of aftermarket headunits and this will let me advertise the car with bluetooth and aux. The car was recently serviced, but could use an alignment.
I’m debating better hubcaps or finding a set of real wheels from markeplace for cheap. The FRS wheels look surprisingly nice and can be had with tires/tpms for $400+- I don’t think the real wheels add value (nor does the bluetooth) but it would make it sell faster.
So here’s to a short term of Matrix ownership.

There is so much Oppo in this post, I can feel the motor oil leaking through my screen.
Seriously, sounds like a good deal all around.

CX5, minor modifications, car puns, I know better but I did it anyway, flipping cars, negotiating things, HUBCAPS, did I get it all?

That would be a perfect car for my oldest son, but I surmise from the hills in the background and the rain on the ground that you are nowhere near TX.

That should sell quickly and for more than you might imagine given the current used car market. That is a clean little machine you’ve got. Pretty rare to see them so nice.

It would, but the closer I get to that day with mine, the larger looms the question, “is this new enough to have all the safety features she needs?”

10 hours from Dallas and I just did the drive (in a different car) a few weekends ago.
To your point though, it is prime first car material for sure! That is part of why I want to have the bluetooth in it. I’m thinking that is j ust enough to make it a good first car choice and not ruled off the list because it’s lacking something many now consider a critical must have.

I’m on oppo and my wife drives a CX-5, so...

Definitely an important point. I don’t even know what year that Matrix is. I see my kid driving the 03 Odyssey, but my wife doesn’t share my vision. Neither does my son. None of his friends drive a minivan.

I suppose factory would be pretty cheap (under $100); that’s the route I would take.
Either way, good luck with the flip!

Bluetooth would be a game changer. I have an old CD player in my Odyssey, and it drives me crazy that I can’t stream my Spotify through it.

Does your son have a girlfriend? How eager are you to become a grandpa? Plenty of room for activities in a van, mini or otherwise, is all I’m sayin’.

Be thankful that he has not yet thought of the virtues of having a vehicle with so much space for people, and occasionally in a horizontal position.

I grew up with a VW Rabbit, but also a Chevy Caprice. Bench seats FTW.

I mean, teenage lust has led to myriad creative solutions when it comes time to satisfy those urges, but that seems like a pretty challenging car for anyone not a tiny gymnast or yogi.

Adapter available! Looks to work similarly to what I’ve order. Plugs in to the space that should/would be occupied by a CD changer and accepts Bluetooth signal for musical goodness.

We got ours around the same time as y’all! I remember discussing the touring vs grand touring and leather vs the touring’s “leather”

I’m ball parking between $3,500 and $5,000. Obviously leaning towards more is better

factory bluetooth or oem wheels? There isn’t a super clean oem solution, so the adapter thing will be good enough. Feeds through the cd changer connector. Fairly simple in concept, but should check the box properly.

Oh crap, just realized my keyboard swallowed a word lol
I meant to write factory hubcaps! The Bluetooth solution you found sounds pretty ideal, TBH.

I’d advertise at $4,900 with those miles and probably settle for $4,500 given the crazy car market right now.

These look similar the oem ones but clearly lack a Toyota logo. I’ve started casually looking to see if I can find a factory set. I can see a little rust on the steelie underneath so there a potential paint project there too.
I’m excited to see how the Bluetooth thing works out! Seems like a decent solution for quite a few older vehicles

Check your local Craigslist and use a mid-high end starting price. You won’t be the most optimistic seller out there and cars are selling no matter what.
You would not believe how saturated my sub 8k manual search was with cool rides 6 months ago. Now there are a few broken Minis, a few thrashed Rangers, and some miscategorized minivans.

I can also plug a BT adapter into the AUX hole. I just don’t want to have to mess with keeping it charged. Thing is, I hardly drive any more these days, so there’s no real urgency to get this done

The AUX is part of the aftermarket CD changer I put in 15 years ago so I could plug my click wheel iPod into it. That’s how old it is. The van is an 03.

I’ve had an iPod connection integrated in the same way with my MkIV Jetta; cable routes into the glovebox, the interior appears 100% stock otherwise. I t still works great after all these years!
I’ve since found that the new version of what I have instead comes with USB, AUX, and Bluetooth all within that same CD changer plug. Same seamless integration as before. Were I buying again (or upgrading), I’d go that route in a heartbeat.

I wish this car had VW (or Ford) radio upgrade-ability. We swapped headunits in the beetle and I gained a screen with OEM bluetooth and USB hook up. It was the dream! This is a decent solution, but not as fully OEM as I was hoping to go with
