Will there be a Christmas this year?

I’ve decided to reserve my favorite cabin at Shakamak State Park over the holiday. I haven’t seen most of my family since February, but I’m pretty sure there won’t be any gatherings this winter. Can’t exactly sit outside, unless of course it’s unusually warm, which who knows?

Winter’s going to be really rough for a lot of people. Fewer recreational outlets, limited socializing, outdoor dining won’t be viable in big chunks of the country, many won’t be able to see family for the holidays, combined with the usual winter blues (short days, lousy weather, grey skies/brown scenery for months).

What are your plans?

I’m not sure about Christmas, but my mom and I have been planning for Thanksgiving and we think we have a plan. Her backyard is tiered, with a deck leading to a lower decked area and then a step to a patio and another step to a lower patio. My father hates mowing so this was the solution...

Anyway, we have bought a couple stand-up propane heaters and will be serving dinner on 4 levels to “family groups.” So my aunt and uncle and cousins on one level, my folks on another, etc. We usually have about 20 people for dinner, but this year will be smaller. I think it will work.

Lovely photos.

Not sure about Christmas yes, but I think we will see family for Thanksgiving this year, just less of them and differently. We’ll see my in-laws first, to protect them as best we can, and then see some of my family (but not my parents, who are in their 80s).

Huh, that’s quite interesting. I guess as long as no one has too much traveling to do so you can easily cancel/reschedule if the weather isn’t cooperating.

There will always be Christmas. Just ask these guys:

Kinja'd!!!

We will drive to Indy to visit my Dad and sibs, like every year. I’m trying to spend as much time up there as I can.

Holidays for couples are usually an exercise in complex, cooperative, and combative scheduling. Good luck sorting that out.

One can only hope that this means they won’t play the same 10 horrible holiday songs in stores this year. We all know they will, but I can dream can’t I?

Honestly no idea. Probably not much which is ok by me. Here in CA we can still do outside things which I much prefer to do in fall and winter as it isn’t summer hot or spring full of allergies .

I’m still irrationally annoyed that Hallelujah has become a Christmas song. Doesn’t anyone actually listen to the lyrics?

It’s a fantastic song, demeaned by being treated so cluelessly .

Farthest drive for folks is only about 20 minutes, so no big deal.  It’s usually not too cold around here at Thanksgiving, so I think it will be good.  Or a spectacular failure, but at least we will have tried.

We’ll be telling stories about this year as long as we live.

Unless, of course, 2021 is somehow spectacularly worse, which......

Idk, but some reason I immediately thought about

But do you mean the Leonard Cohen song? I do not think I have ever heard that played during the holidays as a holiday song. Maybe on one of the rock radio stations that do not play holiday songs.

Thanksgiving is usually a huge family event, with everyone coming to our house. That will not be the case this year. Christmas was usually at my sister’s place, out of state. Currently, my job does not permit me to travel to that state without quara ntin ing for 2 weeks before returning to work, so that is a no go at this time. Quiet times at home seems to be in the cards.

Winter in the Northeast brings lots of opportunities for snow sports, ski, skate, snowshoe, sledding, ice fishing and the likes. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you need to hunker down, dress for the weather and get outside.  In fact, I spend more time at the beach in the winter than I do in the summer.

I’m hoping my Defender arrives so I can spend Christmas sitting on a beach surf fishing in 30 degree weather. Although Christmas day we’ll probably have at least some family over (baring shit not going seriously pear shaped)

Yes, Cohen’s tune, although more often a cover of it. I don’t listen to the radio anymore but I hear it while shopping every year, multiple times, and I’ve heard it while visiting family over the holidays.

Reportedly some Christian musicians have create new, less profane lyrics for it to make it more palatable, while apparently everyone else just never bothered to listen.

I’m a wimp. I’ve been to a Florida beach in 60° weather and was abjectly miserable.

I did do a New Year’s Day hi ke at a state park one year in -5°F temperatures, and took my doors off during similar weather for a Jeep event, but those are by far the exception, and involved so many layers I could barely move.

C’mon down to north Alabama, where it was 74 degrees on Christmas Eve last year, so we shot shotguns at the family farm.

Don’t know. But it retaliated this year by only putting two ears on the corn (actually due to six hot weeks of no rain).

Layers are best, heated clo th ing is good too, although I do not own any. Some days are brut ally cold and windy, those can be spent inside. I’m not saying you need to be out every day, but most are tolerable, especially if you’ re active.

I’ll be on the other side of the state, so if the weather is nice, I might drive, otherwise, it’s an hour flight and I’ll get a ride or rent a car. No hopes for a distanced Christmas - a combination of both my sister and cousin recently buying houses, and grandma not getting any younger, means it’ll be in person .

Thanksgiving might be more of a Zoom affair, however.

Getting away for the holidays is my new favorite thing. Last year we rented a house on lake Champlain for Christmas just the 3 of us and the dogs and it was AMAZING! Best Christmas to recent memory. We had planned to do the Outer Banks this year but my sister in law will be in town this year so were staying home...

Either way I am PUMPED this year. My daughter is 2.5 so this will be the first year that she really knows what is going on with santa etc... Really excited to make it special for her. Gonna Griswold the FUCK out of my house.

The only real bummer this year is Friendsgiving...It’s all of my childhood friends and the friends they have brought into the group throughout history. Not sure what we’ll do this year but there are usually 40 of us and 6-8 dogs, obviously it wont be that!

Been thinking about that too.  Right now its relatively painless to get outside and do stuff.  This year is going to be a big snow year...which is great for skiing, but hard for family stuff.  Not sure how we’ll manage.  My advice?  buy outdoor heaters now.

I don’t miss working holidays. It happens in IT once in a while, but I’ve managed to stay away lately  from roles where it’s a regular occurrence.

I think our Fall would be the equivalent of your summer heat. We’re still having  100+ degree days, but should be into the high 90s by the end of the week.

Yeah, I clearly live in the wrong state. We barely touched the 90s this summer and I hated it. When it gets to 90° is when I can drop the windshield and live my best life.

They’re jacked up. My older sister picked one up a few weeks ago, went to get a second and the price went from 109-> $ 300

my mom and older sis have been doing limited SD cookouts. everyone gets their quadrant from the firepit. My mom asked. “we have the one heater” what do you think? “expand the firep it to hold a bonfire”

option #3 is run extension cords and slip a heated blanket under my coat.
