That moment when the rubber no longer meets the road and you realize you’re a passenger: I’m sure we all know the feeling.

That’s a lot of air for a boat that size moving at 40mph. They’re not the first ones to have the experience either: Luna Rossa did it a few months ago.

And these are just the half scale test boats - pulling the same stunt in something 75ft long and weigh ing 6 tons will get pretty spectacular. It’s no wonder they wear full motorbike armor.

Man, when we were talking AC40's it was sketchy, then the AC72's I feel like this monohull cantilevered foil setup is the sketchiest of all. I guess maybe they wont pitch-pole but its sure going to be a crappy ride either way.

That these guys are, by necessity, not strapped in or wearing any real protection like any other racing series...its super sketch.

EDIT: okay it looks like they are wearing protection now.  Good.

I installed the America’s Cup here in SF, I watched them practice every day for three weeks. That was a great job, I only had to drive from Marin to the waterfront and then we had free parking with security. Larry Ellison tried to screw over the labor, they brought in cheap labor from Hungary, I shit you not. The unions flipped out and SF was not ok with it. They ended up letting some help because they built the stuff in Europe but only a couple spoke English. Ellison is a fucking prick, they also brought security from NZ and he parked his mega yacht crewed with boys in tiny white shorts right on the pier where a lot of equipment had to be moved through. I have to find my pics, I don’t see them on my laptop. I come from a sailing family and they are not fans of these new boats, they do seem crazy and people were hurt. Not sure if Oracle is involved anymore?

It’s definitely going to be dicier than the multihulls - for a start they’re balancing on 2 points rather than three. I expect we’re going to see some oopsies that involve gear breakages and maybe even injuries. OTOH there’s a lot less risk of getting trapped underneath than the cats, so overall I reckon they’ll be less dangerous.

Plus neither of them’s in the same game as longhaul ocean racing when it comes to sketchy - that shi t’s like running Le Mans with no marshalls and no medical crews.

No, Oracle’s out this time - Larry took his toys and went off to sulk after getting his butt kicked last time.

I’m actually pretty good with the direction they’re taking. Old school America’s Cup was a tactician’s game: it was only limitedly  about the actual sailing. With the cats they took it too far towards drag racing - it became a physical performance and technology race. I think they’ve found a median here - lots of skill to sail, lots of tech but enough one-design that it’s not just about budgets, and enough manoevrability that on-course tactics will come into play again.

If people think of it as yacht racing they’ll be disappointed - it’s the ultimate evolution of performance dinghy racing. These things are basically God’s own 470 class.

I didn’t like the foiling cats. I think that I read that w hen they drew up the rules, they didn’t expect them to be foiling on as much of the course as they did.

I like the foiling mono hull s. I think that it is more of an evolution of the history of the Am erica’s Cup than the catamarans were.  I spent many years racing dinghies, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Most of the time, the cats only had two things in the water: the foil and the rudder. If anything else got wet...

Three things: rudders plural. They only retracted the main foil not the rudder foil on the upwind hull. Which gave them a lot more stability because they could trim that upwind foil to give upward or downward force as needed to compensate for transients.
