Mine’s called Peugeot 205 CTI turbo, is from roughly the same year (1987) and I am confident it can beat that Renault in acceleration.
Still though, for a stock car that size for that year, the acceleration of that Renault 5 is quite exceptional. In 1986 only serious sports cars, cars with V8 engines and a few hot hatches (205 GTI 1.9, Ritmo Abarth) would be able to keep up in a straight line. Even a mk2 Golf GTI 16V was slower. Include some curves and you’d lose the V8 powered sedans.
in 2020 it’s not that exceptional anymore at all, objectively, but from a subjective feeling behind the wheel I’m sure few modern attainable cars come anywhere close.

Having owned one in the day, while my roommate owned a 205GTI 1.9: the Pug couldn’t keep up in a straight line. Even without me screwing down the wastegate. 50/50 round the twisties, and he could take me under braking, but I had him under acceleration every time.

The 0-100kph is still quite close to a current semi-sporty FWD hatchback like a 308 GT or Golf GTi ( non performance) for example.

Depends a bit on the version of the 1.9 I guess. The one before the cat was introduced had more hp (131) than the Renault (116) , but being NA it is harder to get those ponies out. On paper the early 1.9 (so pre-cat) was very marginally faster. Still though, as a keyboard warrior I am not going to disagree with your real world e xperience :)
When did you and your buddy have these cars?

Roughly 90-94. He got his before I got mine. Both were used when bought. The R5 was an 88 (so early Phase II, pre-Raider) and I think the Pug was a little older - maybe 87?
The 5 was noticeably lighter than the 205, which evened out the HP difference. All the magazines had the GTI1.9 a little faster 0-60, but from my experience that was likely down to the getaway - the 5 had nothing below 2500rpm and all the torques by 3000, and of course it was before traction control or FWD LSDs. It was really hard to do a fast takeoff without either bogging down or lighting up a tire. Once you were rolling though, the 5 was a little faster in a straight line. In real world driving it was noticeably quicker if you could keep it on boost due to the extra midrange, but obviously if you let the turbo slow down you’d get your butt kicked before it cam e back. All very much classic early-t urbo vs NA stuff.
We had a lot of fun with them as we lived in a semi-rural environment: l ooking back, I ’m honestly surprised neither of us had a big accident or lost our license.

It’s so much easier when you make your cars out of tinfoil. The 5GTT weighed in at under 900kg.

It’s too bad the R5 is such a forgotten car now. I’d love to have a spin in one.
Like I mentioned I own a 205 cti turbo. As in, 150 hp (in the donor car) turbo in a 1987 205 convertible. Nothing much until 2500 rpm, and then it goes all the way until 6000. It feels like a rocket ship, even though it’s not objectively fast for 2020 standards. 200 kmh in a blink of an eye though. It's really a lot of fun. They don't make them like they used to...
