On my way home today, I stopped to fill up the 3 at the Shell station I frequent. It might be a few cents more than the other gas stations I could stop at, but it’s a lot more convenient than stopping at the QT by work. As a result, this is where I fill up most often. Looks like they added chip readers to the pumps.

I shouldn’t be surprised !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the burden for fraud would fall onto the station and not Visa. I’m more surprised that it’s taken this long for me to see one. I know I used a chip at a pump in France, but as far as the US, this is the first I’ve seen of it.

As far as pay at the pump, yes. It’s been used in stores since later 2014 or so, but as far as at the gas pump, this is the first I’ve seen it.

I know when I went to Europe in 2013, I ordered a credit card with a chip because my card didn’t even have one.

Speedway has had it around here (Indiana)  for a year or two. I can even use Apple Pay at a few places, like Meijer.

I’ve been on the road a lot, moving rally cars and projects around, and I’ve noticed in the last 60 days that Love’s, Pilot-FlyingJ have started to roll out the Chip Readers at the pump.

It’s taken them long enough, but it’s reassuring after having my card hacked three times in the last two years.

Wow, welcome to the Century of the Fruitbat! I can’t remember the last time I swiped a card anywhere - chips have been ubiquitous all over (including pay at pump) for years here. We’ve also had contactless payment at the pump in all the main chains for several years, and a couple of operators now have number plate recognition based “fill up and go” payment options. Gas stations tend to be technology leaders not laggers in NZ.

These started popping up here around April... every now and then I still do a quick swipe and it gets all sorts of pissed off. Eventually I’ll get used to it.

I started seeing them late last year. I’m pretty sure some machines had the feature already but it was turned off before.

In any event, get used to it, the deadline has been extended a few times (most recently due to covid) , but currently if they don’t read chips by April of next year, they will be liable for fraudulent charges rather than the credit card company.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and assert that this is SOOOOO on-brand for Wells-Fargo... I’m willing to bet that’s not even a real Charger. Or a real grille.

By the way, I’ve deducted $29 from your checking account for making this post. You’re welcome. We’ve also set up Auto-Deduct ACH to your account for use in future posts. And, don’t think about calling the authorities. We have all your personal information and know where you live.

My chipless cards always worked fine in Europe. Sometimes the person operating the reader is confused as to how we could be so backwards, but the readers could still swipe and everything would go through. Now of course pretty much every US card has had a chip for years, so no need to swipe, though people still get weirded out by being asked to make you sign a receipt instead of entering a PIN (now that US banks no longer require signatures, maybe that can be dropped too, though I certainly see plenty of US places still asking for signatures even though they are no longer required).

Yeah, and the subscriber banks pay up big too. They all went along, for years, content to take the hit in Fraud Prevention instead of step up to tech Asia has had for almost 20 years. Weird.

The doubly strange part is we are STILL years behind... those SIM contacts are not up to the daily wear and tear— and in the last couple of years high volume stores like Costco and Home Depot commonly have pooched out contact pins in their card readers. So, we’ll have a years-long-wait for “contactless” and “tap to pay” technologies... that’s been commonplace in Europe for well over 5 years.

Here in the US most cards and readers got chips circa 2015 (when credit card issuers made them do so or be on the hook for fraudulent charges). Gas stations however got an extension due to the high cost of replacing readers integrated into pumps. That extension keeps getting extended, but is also getting close so places are making the change.

Wireless payment is growing more common, though card issuers often don’t provide it so it’s been more popular with Apple Pay and the like. Mobil had a proprietary fob for doing wireless payments going back to the late ‘90s, but obviously that’s obsolete now. Never heard of anyone doing license plate based payment, but I guess if they can do it for tolls, they should be able to do it for gas as well.

We’ve had chip readers in Canada at practically all gas stations for at least a decade now.

As for Visa not taking any responsibility for fraud... well that’s just BS and a good reason not to use or accept their cards.

They’ve had license plate recognition at gas stations  for anti-theft for a few years, so I guess it’s a small step to hook it up to a payments system. Plate based payment is also becoming common in parking buildings here.

I saw my first one recently, too.  It was one that physically held the card while it read the chip.  I only noticed when I went to pull the card out on the swipe and the card didn’t come out until I pulled harder.  Then I read the screen, realized what it was and followed directions...

All credit card in France have a chip since 1992 and the USA seems to be the last one of the G20 countries not to force credit card to have one.

I am 33 and i never had to swipe my card.
