So I was tired of being stuck inside by the pandemic and went shopping on Amazon for a present for myself and got a half case of octane boost just for kicks. I hadn’t ever used one in a turbo car, (just to make old crappy cars stop pinging,) I swear, the WRX picked up 20hp even with just half a bottle at fill up yesterday. We can only get 92 up here and the car wants 93 so maybe that’s part of it. Anybody else play with this stuff?

Only good one is boostane. It works and works well.

As someone who has tuned a WRX after a turbo swap , any performance gains you felt was from sitting inside for the last seven months.
While tuning, I fed my WRX 102 octane gas and the ECU only added a bit of timing over the shitty 91 octane we have here. That’s after wiping the timing tables. If you didn’t reset your ECU, then it wouldn’t have changed the timing tables much at all.
All cars are tuned a bit rich, and the rex’s are tuned to run on shitty southwest 91 octane, so it’s unlikely your car was pulling timing running 92.

I once mixed Nitromethane with my fuel. That was interesting :)

I’ve always heard that stuff was snake oil but you might have found a solid version.

I'm sure my slow car which requires premium would still be slow.

It took the people in that thread entirely too long to figure out what he was saying he did

Bare in mind that when they quote points of octane boost then mean .x.
I.e. 8 point increase in octane doesn't mean going from 91 to 99. It means going from 91 to 91.8

I don’t know man, my butt dyno was honestly surprised. I was expecting basically no difference without an updated tune , (or worse yet, a slight drop off in power and increase oil temps,) but it is noticeable . I wonder if my local 92 just is really junky...

Even if your 92 sucks, it’s gonna take a while for the ECU to add timing, and even then, it’s just a bit of timing. TBH, the only time you’ll feel a difference from an octane increase without a tune is on a tuned up carbureted engine or an FI without knock sensors.
This is what we'll show whenever you publish anything on Kinja:

Grab a bottle of acetone. Same effect but probably cheaper.

Or... 1 quart xylene (octane boost) 6 oz Amsoil PI (cleaning, UCL) 1 oz Amsoil Gas Fuel Stabilizer 1 oz 100:1 2-cycle oil (UCL) Mix in one gallon metal gas can. Pour in 1/2 full tank, and bounce car.

You are better off finding a Sunoco which has 100 octane at the pump. I used the Royal Purple octane booster once like some has said many cheap no-name octane boosters basically add 0.1-0.9 + making your 93 basically 94 at best. T he Royal Purple added 3.0 digits. So it made my 93 >>> 96. There is like or or two out there that do this. I think VP Racing makes one that is slightly better than the RP one. My butt dyno could feel a better difference with 50% 93 and 50% 100 than any octane booster.

I usually run a little rough after ingesting that stuff.
