Ok oppopeeps , I witnessed that this place is about posting what the dog had for breakfast, sharing feelings about the “ check engine” li ght on one’s GTI, and general automotive bullsh&t, ranging from shameless self-promotion to hilarious self-deprecation. But I also have not abandoned the hope that some actual technical topics have their place on here, so here we go :
How does one notch a tube at a very shallow angle ? Asking for a friend. Please send picture.
( shallow is the key word here, I already own a H orror F raught-style tube notcher that works pretty well for 30-90 degrees angles, but not 10-15 degrees angles).

You know, Darkbrador, notching a tube is like making love to a beautiful woman.
You gotta invest in stocks,
then get a valid certificate,
and finally re-write the firmware.

Once I used a band saw and then trial and error with an angle grinder.
Not ideal but got the job done.

Is it deflecting and not cutting into the tube at a shallow angle? Have you tried going real slow?
Almost wonder if you could hack it theN smooth surface with a endmill.
My coworker did something like that where he fixed the endmill in a lathe chuck and mounted a 1/2” tube to the carriage. He was a machinist so I don’t know how safe that was.
Another is get close and a 1.5” or 2” diameter grinding cylinder.

This may help, or maybe notch.

One of the more interesting ways I’ve seen involves rolling a piece of graph paper around the tube, cutting it to size, unrolling the paper,
marking it, then rolling it back around and taping it.
I’m not sure that helps much, though. What tools does your friend have at his disposal for notching the tube?

Thanks for the tip.

Most notching tools/jigs hold the tube at an angle between 30 to 90 degrees from the hole saw bit, but don’t have a range of angle that allow a shallow cut. Going free handed with a drill is out of question if you want a clean and precise cut.

I was reading “ works pretty well for 30-90 degrees angles, but not 10-15 degrees angles” , as the tool was chattering and not cutting in. I was thinking you could do a rough cut with the hole saw, then clean up with an end mill. or smooth it out with a grinding stone.
Now I see it doesn’t go down to that low angle.
A bit more work, could you copy the mounting bracket with an offset?

Yeah, unless going for professional (read out of my price range) notching tool, there is nothing that will do. So, I ordered the tool recommended by This is what we’ll show whenever you publish anything on Kinja: below.

This tool, or paper to make a template, then cut with plasma torch/oxy torch, and smooth to fit with die grinder and file. The old school way.
