Yay. Friday.

Not much enthusiasm over here right now. I just got a call from a PM who NEEDS SOMETHING NOOOO OWWWW!!!! There go my plans for the day. Not that I wasn’t going to work, but I wasn’t going to work on THAT.

I was up to about 40 hours this week end of day yesterday - that having been a ten hour day and tuesday having been 12 hours. A whole lot of “buttwiping”/wet-nursing (?) of projects this week. Turns out when you’re supposed to know and understand every aspect of a project and you try to defer something to someone else’s area of expertise, they can ignore it and it then becomes your fault.

This has been a week full of 10-12 hour days for me too. We are working on federal funding applications which require us to estimate the amount of damage due to flooding and then estimate the reduction in damage after the proposed project is complete. The right way to do this is through watershed modeling, but we have 40 applications that have to be completed in less than a month and we haven’t been given enough budget to throw an army of water resources engineers at the problem. So, this week has been filled with conference calls where I had to challenge engineers to help me develop a tool with just enough data to get the answers we need without taking the deep dive into the all the information that could be developed if we had the time or budget. Listen, engineers, as long as we are within 20% or so of reality, that’s good enough for the application. You’ll get a chance to do the modeling during design phase if we get the application done by the deadline.

Those calls really wear me out.

Speaking as someone with an engineering background who constantly has to scream NEED INPUT at people wanting me to make drawings for quotes, I sympathize with both sides of your conundrum.

It’s tough for them. They want to give the best answer possible and I think they have a lot of trouble giving a “good enough” answer. I was just on the phone tasking one of our GIS Analysts with some work that I need done today. I KNOW it’s a two to three hour task. He wants closer to 40 hours to get it done. So, I had to give him instructions on how to get it done in the shorter timeframe. Project by project analysis? No. That takes too long. Use the tools you have in the software and do the analysis in bulk.
