Front Page is out of Control. I Made one Comment About Mach-E 1400 Noise...

I commented on the front page article about the Mach E 1400 noise. There is a car and driver video where the guy goes through some specs on the Mach E 1400 and towards the end he mentions that there is a military grade PA speaker under the car that can output whatever noise you want the car to make.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m an Engineer and I design performance racing parts for a living, so yes, I know what electric motor whine and straight cut gears sound like. After seeing the car and driver video and knowing there is some sort of loud PA speaker under the vehicle, it pretty much confirmed that Ford is at least capable of enhancing the sound of the Mach E 1400 for the videos.

BUT because I said “military grade” as a direct quote from the car and driver video, every single comment is the equivalent of “fake news” and “military grade means nothing” completely missing the point of the comment and the sound system on the car.

Sounds like the FP is functioning normally to me.

In all fairness, you didn't put military grade in quotations and most Kinja dwellers observe highschool debate rules in the comments: find a weak spot and just hold on to it for dear life!

well I guess I learned my lesson.  I’ll have to use quotes from now on, and also avoid front page comments.

I'm actually surprised that, just like the motors in the Mach E, no one was really listening to you, but to an artificial noise they made up in their mind.

Just said that it sounds bad, was expecting more flak, but people were surprisingly civil, or they agreed.

I have friends who were involved in the Mach E 1400 shoot. I'm planning on asking them how much of the sound was the speaker and how much was the actual car

I always like when people say on the FP, “I would buy this car if it came in a manual.” Actually, no you wouldn’t.

It would be pretty perception altering if it came out that the actual sound the vehicle made was significantly different. Saying t he part most people didn’t like was manufactured by Ford, would be a pretty interesting point .

I’ve been guilty of saying that myself, but I did do my part back in 2012 when I bought a manual Mazda 2 brand new.  I was super disappointed that we didn’t get the updated 2015 one.

Agree although I think most super extreme cars sound bad. Seems like it comes with the territory of being so extreme. At least in the modern age

I’m still hung up on the presenter saying “This is hollowed ground!” [sic] twice.

That doesn’t sound like a safe place to test a car. I’d aim for something more solid.

I feel you. I gave a pretty mild critique of Tesla’s stock valuation and my long-held belief that their success is going to be short-lived once other automakers start taking it seriously (ie, their business “moat” is shallow). Holy crap, the anger.

Almost as bad as the time I told a SlickDeals group that aftermarket remote starters were “kind of a gimmick” and that you really shouldn’t let modern cars warm up, idling, for long.

The funny thing about the internet is that every opinion has to be polar or people don’t seem to speak up.

Oh you have to clarify tropes there (well any place on the interwebz these days) .

Quotes, /s [sarcasm], even the odd emoji... A nything you can use to identify to the robots not to take the writing 100% literally.

I’ve seen many a commenter trying to “ correct” obvious irony, satire and metaphors. It’s painful reading them attempting to be smart.

What they really mean is what I’ve meant when I’ve wished for a manual on the FP from time to time, which is

“if it had a manual I would be stoked to buy a used 10yo one at 5-10% of new msr p with a manual. I’m worried about what will be left for me to buy with a  manual in 2030 because of how few new ones are hitting the road right now”

I always like when people say on the FP, “I would buy this car if it came in a manual.” Actually, no you wouldn’t .

I actually feel a little guilty about that. I’m sure I’ve said it, I know I’ve thought it, but I have yet to feel like I’m in a position to buy something new.

But every time I look for what’s available, the cars I want are either getting even more expensive, or just aren’t offering what I want or need in a car.

Why can’t a car company make an affordable 2+2 sports coupe with a functional back seat?  I can’t be the only dad out there that wants a sports car but can only afford one vehicle.  (And no, the mustang and Camaro are horribly cramped)

If you must comment on the FP, at least wait until there are >360 prior comments, which ensures no one will scroll all the way down to yours for trolling, having found easier targets earlier in the list. Me? I like to wait a full week before I comment on FP stuff, which ensures no one (not even the author) will bother to read it. Good luck

If KIA offered a manual with their base engine on the Stinger I'd absolutely be looking at buying it new. As it is, I'll wait for the GT to be 5 years old and buy a used one.

Kinja'd!!!1

A manual kia Stinger would definitely be high on the list. But I’m also the guy who wouldn’t consider a used one without a manual, they’re still to expensive for me to buy one if it doesn’t have everything I wish it had.

I know the Genesis G70 has a manual, but it’s also close to $40k once you get the manual. I can get my dream Challenger with a shaker and a performance pack and a manual for less than that price.

I like the G70 but the rear seat and the trunk are absolutely tiny. I don't think a car seat would fit in the back seat with the front in a comfortable position. I love the challenger too but want 4 doors on my next car.

Kinja'd!!! CobraJoe > MasterMario - Keeper of the V8s

Considering that my car never ends up taking the family very often, I’m ok with a 2 door, and the challenger has a truly functional back seat (all 6'2" of me fits comfortably). It’s just a little too pricey (R/T is requried to get a manual) to plan on buying it new for my next car, but I often wonder how I could make it work.

I raised a question on a FP article on the Dodge Charger/Challenger (forget which one), about why people care if the platform of said vehicle was based on is so old if it works. Boy did I get reamed. One went something along the lines of “do you keep your 20 year old TV because it ‘works’?”. The Challenger/Charger is a good car that sells well; they’re not going to over haul the platform because kinjans hate how old it is.

I’m just cranky because I have an Alfa Romeo 4C and every article on Jalopnik is filled with people saying that they would have bought it if it had a stick (which of course is bullshit) . Those comments are then followed up with how a 4C should be priced at the same level as a Miata (more bullshit) . And then the parade of reliability jokes. Should a manual transmission have been an option? Sure, but a manual isn’t offered in the majority of sports/exotic cars nowadays. And my 4C has never had a single issue. Meanwhile, I should send pics of all of the warranty work my AMG has had: new clutch, new transmission, replaced blind spot sensors, replaced weather stripping, etc.

Kinja'd!!! CobraJoe > Napoli

I also believe the 4C needed a manual option, it still seems to be required for buyers to believe it is a sports car, even if the take rate is extremely low. (Especially considering the price point and power level and competition).

I was a bit disappointed it was expensive, but its basically a mini Ferrari, so it doesn’t really fit into my life anyways.

Im with you on reliability worries. Most cars aren't as bad as their reputation, and the ones with the great reputation can be lemons too.
