I just had the kind of CAD crash that makes one question their life choices.

No drawing recovery advice needed or desired, please and thank you. I’m just... wow. I want to be angry, but I honestly don’t have it in me. I am just utterly defeated.

Mechanical 2015 was by far the worst version of AutoCAD I have ever used by far, constant crashing.

Its gotten a lot better in the versions since but I still have PTSD from those days.

My coworker always makes fun of me for constant saving, hten had to clean up one of the folders “gmporschenut...there 5700 files in this.”

If restarting coffee and a walk if you’re done, t ime for beer.

Doesn’t even need to be ACAD. I’ve used CADDS, CATIA, Solidworks and PRO/E as well as ACAD, and pretty much all of them have caused me to feel your pain at one point or another. There’s times when stacking boxes starts to look like an attractive career option.

Deep breath and a walk in the park, or if that doesn’t work, bottle of whisky and a straw.

Admittedly I am no t a fan of   AutoCAD, so I’d be flat out defeated . So yeah...I can imagine t hat really sucks.

I lost many days of SolidWorks last year during a massive project completion push. We use a weird hybrid of saving to a normal server or to an EPDM system. It causes problems at times. Anyhow, I was using the EPDM server but it had kicked me (no notifications) and SW didn’t know/care. I was manual saving to nothing, and SW a utosaved to nothing, everything was acting normal. As I was building some stupidly large configuration assembly (400+ configs) i t crashed, I rebooted. Everything went *poof*. Just wanted to I don’t know...quit, cry, melt the server down, just...f.

I’m so sorry. I cannot begin to list the number of CAD crashes that have ruined more than a day for me. A former office had a “number of days since CAD crash” next to the number of safe days without accident. fortunately the staff was more safe than CAD.

Civil 3D user here too. I’ve had that happen a few times over the years, most recently in April. Just felt gutted. All you can do is step away for a while then start over.

Recently upgraded to 32gb of ram and it seems to have helped.

I’d like to bash acad, but NX has been driving me batty for 6 months after years of rock solid performance . I literally bought a new workstation so I can stop hearing “well your machine isn’t on the certified hardware list”. Hey guess what, the measure command still causes graphics freezes.

Aaand a coworker “turned off my computer because it was taking a long time to save” yesterday. Well you were saving an assembly back to team center with 4000 parts in it, over the internet. Upside: I’ve learned how to resync  a corrupt BVR.

Yes, technology is continually improving, but coding is apparently not.

We’re all working on company-issued laptops now, which are actually really good, no complaints there.  AutoCAD is what it is, though.

We are now using project wise or as I call it project fuck-up. The auto cad seems to be reliable but project not so wise has serious issues on a weekly basis and I’m on a 100 sheet set of plan and profile drawings at the moment. Yeah!

We just transitioned into PW as well (some projects are still transitioning), and yeah, it comes with its own share of headaches. What kills me is the idea that we are not on the cutting edge here, other firms MUST have been thru this before. So why is there still so many compatibility problems between ACAD and PW???

Hey, aren't you in Texas too?

Just realized you said you’re on a set of 100 sheets... How are you managing without the use of Sheet Set Manager, since that was all but kneecapped by PW?

In school I once completed the entire assignment of a complicated surface model in Solid Works and then the power went out. I had forgotten to save at any time. I damn near burnt the place down. I’ve also blue screened my computer here at work with a large assembly in Solid Edge. I feel you

Me, months ago: Damn, CAD crashes this file every time it saves. *turns off autosave*

* Months of work go by, no problem*

Me, yesterday, six hours into a grading plan without autosave:

It always amazes me how Civil 3D knows you’re in a hurry and rush ing up on a deadline so it will choke and die and delete your last half-hour’s work. Is there some kind of subsystem that measures the frequency of your key presses and mouse clicks to determine the user’s stress level?

There’s something similar built into both of the plotters in my office. Somehow they know when you’re in a hurry, e.g. , there’s a client waiting at the front desk, or a field crew getting ready to leave the office and go to a job site waiting to pick up a worksheet , and then, only then, do they decide to run out of paper or simply lock up.

Sorry bud, it doesn’t get any better. It really helps work flow with everybody working from home but if you are used to working in an office with a kick ass file server there is no comparison.
