I’m back in the iPhone fold.

I’m not a phone review kind of guy, and Android and iOS each has its strengths. Plus, I find critiquing cars much more fun than electronic devices. But a few things I think iOS does better than Android :

AutoCorrect: iOS predicts typo (English) and brushstroke (Chinese) corrections much more accurately than Android. This makes a huge difference; typing and writing are much more pleasant for me on iOS.

Predictive text: Same as above, although the difference is less stark. Apple is slightly better

Chinese text input. Lazy me can handwrite simplified Chinese characters, and iOS automatically predicts the traditional Chinese character set for me. Android still does not have this built-in.

Firm and consistent differentiation between regional Chinese variations (character sets, dialects and word usage, etc.)

General operation speed and smoothness

Home screen app folders

But wow these things are heavy!

I just ordered an 11. I was also experiencing more than enough troubles with my Pixel 2.

The one thing that bothers me, and I’m not sure if it falls under autocorrect or predictive text, is when it changes a correctly spelled word to another word that I didn’t actually want to use.

Mind you, my android devices can’t fix shit. But it still irritates me.

Do you stick with the stock keyboards? I’ve found SwiftKey and other big options to be miles ahead of Apple and Android’s various options in terms of predictive text and auto correct.

Android’s a trocious messaging platform is pitiful . I message just keeps improving, while Android.... Basically the same platform as what I had in the pre-smartphone days.

It also bugs me to no end t hat I can’t match my mobile email signature to my desktop email signature because android doesn’t support color in their fonts. What a world where A pple’s * Gmail* app offers basic features that are completely unavailable on Android’s in-house version .

Yep, early in my iOS adventures I found that AutoCorrect was overbearing, and “correcting” my correct words into incorrect words. T hey’ve definitely improved that.

I’m looking to make the jump to iPhone as well when my current contract is up.

It’s interesting that the Chinese typing is easier on iPhone considering all the Chinese phone brands that use Android. Maybe it’s the default keyboard? I use Swiftkey on Android but my main reason for wanting to ditch Android is the stupid, limited software support from manufacturers where 2 years of software upgrades is probably the best you can get, even with Android One (like my phone).

The iOS 14 previews I’ve seen looked quite nice, and the Apple cameras in general look quite nice compared to my LG G7 One, although I did like the camera on my old S7 Edge (which I hate because it developed a big screen issue even before its 2 years were up).

I don’t think I’m going to go up to the Pro/Pro Max models but when my contract is up in December the iPhone 12 should be released and then I can decide if I want the latest and greatest iPhone or go with leftover 11 models.

Yeah, I’ve been sticking with the OS-native input methods so far.  Good to know though.

SwiftKey was great for me for the longest time, to the point where I didn’t even need to look at my phone when typing, just left thumb/right thumb. Then all the sudden it wasn’t. I looked at the key map, tried a few other settings then bailed on it.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to the “widget” style updates in 14.

As for Chinese, common input methods vary by region. The vast majority of users of course are in mainland China, where Hanyu Pinyin is input on a QWERTY keyboard. I do use this on the PC, but it cannot generate characters unique to my native Cantonese dialect. I’m assuming Android has a very solid Pinyin input logic.

People in Taiwan and Hong Kong generally do not use Hanyu Pinyin as a default.  I personally use brushstroke input (basically handwriting with my finger), and I like Apple’s implementation better.

Got one of them coming in the next week or so for my work phone, replacing an iPhone 8.

Personal phone is a Pixel 3a, like somethings about it more, some about IOS more.  The back button is one thing I keep coming back to and loving about Android.

You can go into the keyboard settings and put in the words you don’t want to have corrected.

Is this what the “Chinese (Traditional)“ and “Chinese (Simplified)“ refer to when presented with language options?

I just picked up a remanufactured iPhone X to replace an 8 that decided it needed to be charged 4-5 times a day if I actually wanted to use it. I nearly jumped ship to Samsung, but I’m so used to the world of iPhone that I decided to stick around.

I am endlessly changing “cat” and “car” because it always decides I want the opposite of whatever I typed. Stop guessing, Apple, you’re never right.

Correct! Couple random characters (top Traditional, bottom is the  equivalent Simplified):

Japanese Kanji use a mix of both, but also has a few unique “simplifications” not used in Chinese.

Android still isn’t as consistent as iOS on enforcing the character set within apps.

We still have the 5 I used prior to that phone. My father in law used it until recently and had zero issues. He doesn’t use it much but the signal where he lives is poor enough that most of the battery drain is probably from trying to connect.
