The developer was just charged with his 5th OUI after running over a guy in a wheelchair. That guy sadly faced the same result as these projects.

That is just plain awful. The fact that he still has a license after 4 prior incidents points at a systemic failure.

Yeah, no one should ever get to 5, because they probably should permanently lose their license after 2 or 3, and should be in jail by number 4 if they keep driving after permanently losing their license (or at least have some very aggressive monitoring) .
The system failed wheelchair guy...
Too bad about the loss of the projects too, I like the first one a lot.

Most of the habitual offenders don’t have a license at all. They just drive anyways, because they’re horrible people who care only about themselves and the law doesn’t apply to them.

Yep, and I'd go so far as to say we're too lenient with partial restoration of driving privileges for work and essential tasks. I know a few alcoholics, it doesn't matter what time of day it is, if they're on the clock working, or if they're going to an optometrist appointment, they can be just as bombed as a college kid on Thursday night. We should have low power, low speed, low safety sans permis vehicles like France - multiple DUIs but still have to go to work? Fine, drive a Ligier or Aixam, commute will be twice as long, but that's what you get.

Right, which means we need another way to deal with them. Maybe that’s putting them in jail, so they can’t drive (though that’s obviously wasteful), maybe it’s aggressive monitoring, maybe it’s crushing any car they drive. But you can’t just let them keep endangering others.

well i think one of those OUI’s was in a helicopter that he crashed into the cape cod canal....
...but yes, even 3 is too ma ny. That first one was going to be in my home town. I was really excited about it.

I worked with a guy who drank himself to death over a two-year period. He was an electron microscopist. I watched him processing samples one afternoon. His hands would shake as he reached down with the forceps, but when he caught the sample, he was rock-steady. Our lab was studying the effects of alcohol in an animal model, so he had ready access to pharmaceutical grade alcohol. He kept water and limes in his office fridge just so he could keep the buzz going throughout the day.

May not have had a license, but clearly the state didn’t do enough to keep him off the roads.

It really hits home when an entirely preventable tragic accident takes place and it is not out of the ordinary.

Sounds like the college girl who bought a Power W heels a few years back when Daddy took her car away for a DUI.

The office manager at the nonprofit I used to work at came to us from an accounting firm. She said her old boss had a major drinking problem and was always drunk in the afternoon, ate his lunch at his desk, nobody ever saw him drinking. But, he did eat tons of oranges, constantly throughout the day. They found out he was injecting oranges with vodka with a turkey baster and bringing them in a bag at a time

As someone who perpetually deals with drunks... a prohibition order isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. I’ve seen people get released for a DUI Tuesday and be arrested again Friday for another DUI.
I don’t know what the answer is. I wish we had one.

At what point is it a systemic failure and at what point do we recognize the guy’s an asshole for being a drunk driver ? “Tough on crime” doesn’t work (obviously). And just because someone doesn’t have a license doesn’t mean they don’t drive anyway.
Any type of out in the world punishment that exists is pretty easily circumvented, anything that would keep them off the roads forever is not worth the risk to rights and freedoms.
