Had a motorsports filled weekend. Track day on Fr iday, corner worked for races on Saturday, autocross on Sunday. Here’s some highlights:

First, my first on-track spin. I’ve spun at autocross more than a few times, but in 5 on track experiences to date I hadn’t accomplished that. Managed to stay on track.

For some non-spin moments, here’s a few minutes of video ‘highlights’. Chasing a former oppo regular !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in his 2.5 swapped NC, l aps behind bman in his NA , and trying to fend off my buddy in his ZL1 and an old autocross friend in a GT350. Spoiler: FRS’s can’t outpace either of those muscle cars

I have no content to share from the races as I was focused on doing my job, so skip ahead to Sunday. My best run, which was good enough for 9 th fastest raw time and only 1 second behind my class leader (a 15 year old talent who is a 3 or 4 time national champion in junior karts).

Jesus that looks fun. I haven’t driven on a track in like 3 years..........

Heartland is a really fun track. I have only done motorcycle trackdays there. It’s technical enough that a good rider on a smaller CC bike won’t be blown away by the big bikes. I would imagine cars would have a similar experience.

Why did it spin? Low tire pressure or cold tires?

My God, that avalanche article. I was lurking back then. The comments....

I went into the turn too fast, tried to correct by slowing which led to lift off oversteer.

Didn’t look to fast to me. The tire just didn’t look like it ever took a bite. what were the tires, street tread?

200TW street tires. You can hear them screaming into the turn, and this was probably halfway through my 3rd 20 minute session so things were getting hot and slimy. Had I stayed in it I might have made it through the turn, but didn’t want to go off the other side.

Maybe not blown away, but the power cars definitely pull away quickly. In the technical sections us slow cars can keep up, but when you hit that front straight it’s over.

What kind of tread blocks did they have?  Which tire are they?

I don’t know why the tread block would make much difference. It’s the new Falken RT660 autocross tire. Absurdly grippy, but heat up quickly so by the end of a long hot track day they get greasy

Ok its essentially a race tire its not a treaded street tire . I asked because it just gave up like a street tread tends to do. What kind of tire pressure are you running? Is it mushing on turn in? Or did it just slide?

You should have been able to hold it. Those tires just gave up. My guess is you are running too much tire pressure and that the tire is not conforming to the load. My favorite method is to start soft (less than 26 pounds) so that you can feel the sidewall giving up. Then boost the pressure until it performs well and then stop.

More pressure feels great but slows you down because like in your case, once you lose it, you cannot get it back. because the tire is just sliding like a block . I find 28 pounds are good for 15" rims. Your’s are probably 18" rims so I don’t know where your sw eet spot is.

Here’s an article. Andy knows what he is talking about. Guess what, he recommends 28 pounds....... https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/falken-azenis-rt-660-tire-test-autocross-and-track/

I started the day at 28, probably should have dropped it once the temps came up.

Based on the article, you were in the neighborhood which is good enough in my experience. Either those tires turn to grease as hot or they were cold. Watch this video, I was sliding the back tires plenty in a rear drive opel GT on 200 TW tires and notice it did not give up and go straight to spin . Figure out how to make the back end stick and you will find a lot of time.

I assure you they weren’t cold. This was 10-15 minutes into the 3rd 20 minute session. I’m fairly confident that it was a case of lift off oversteer. I felt I was pushing, became concerned with getting back to the apex, and lifted at the wrong time.
