So... I decided to pull the hydraulic pump and attack it straight on...
There it is...
I cleaned up the area with brakecleen a little more, and then probed the plug with a pick...
That little fucker.
So.. It’s aluminum, and tapered with a flange at the top. I HAD A BRAINWAVE.
I OWN A LATHE.
The small aluminum stock requires the 5C chucks...
I turned the flange at the top of the new one 3 thousands over.
Old
New
Lets tap that fucker in nice and tight.
Thats tight. I actually sanded it down a little, ‘cuz it wouldn’t start as it came off the lathe at 3 thou over.
Roughed up the block with some emory cloth and then capped all three (even the non leaking ones) with some high temp RTV
I’m’a let that set overnight, then reinstall the hydraulic pump. I would say something like “I dare that little bastard to leak now!” but I know better than to tempt a recurring oil leak like that, so instead I’ll just pray it stays leak free.

Nicely done, I want a lathe for wood or metal, I'm not picky.

Heres one to freak you out: the PTO shaft on my 80HP tractor, because it is only spinning at ~540 RPM has ~720 lb/ft of torque (#drivelinel osses) . That’s why the PTO shaft guard is so important.
By comparison, my lathe only has 1.75hp and two emergency stop switches.

I remember an apprentice long ago who was routing some teak for a boat handrail. Lots of it. After an hour or more of high pitched whining, the abrupt Bbrrbbttbt of him trimming two fingers on his left hand nearly gave half of us in the shop a heart attack...

I am still trying to convince my wife that I need a lathe...
Also, I rarely need a lathe. But I want one. I wish they were much lighter so I can rent one from some place... but they weigh slightly less than a fully loaded coal train from Montana.

That’s why it’s called a power take-off, it has the power to take-off any limb you get near it.

South Bend. 13" toolroom. Late 40's vintage. All the bells and whistles, including wide-range shift gears and full length taper attachment. Sadly the gearset is SAE threads only... I’m keeping an eye out for metric gears, but they are a bit rare for these lathes. I may eventually end up going ELS (electronic lead screw). I like this guy’s system/design.

nice, I’m retired from my career in machine shop and want to find a not worn out lathe about that size, I’m having withdrawals not having access to the shop for the first time since before Elvis got fat. I’m into restoring some motorcycles i’ve been holding onto and need to do some cylinder boring etc. found a few but they are too new [expensive] or worn out. a friend of mine is older than me and I’m waiting him out to sell me his setup, I think I will send him another offer right now, have fun

Haha, this one’s no spring chicken. It was a working-for-a-living lathe from purchase until the early 90's, at which point the original owner finally retired and sold off his shop. It’s been a hobby lathe with just me and one other owner since then. It had it’s ways and bearings redone sometime in the ‘70s... It's headstock was also updated somewhere around that time too, to one that accepts 5C collets. So it’s “tight” for an 80 year old machine... It’s still an 80 year old machine though. I'm not doing rocket turbine pumps on it though, so I figure it's fine ;)
