So the restaurant I work for has 3 cars for delivery drivers to use. 2 Prius Cs and one very hail damaged 2017 Prius.
On both of our Cs the passenger side taillights collect water. One of them is cracked, but one isn’t at all. It seems like there must be a problem with how water flows done the hatch, and possibly into the back of the taillight . So next time you walk past a Prius C take a look at the passenger taillight and see if it’s got water in it.

Drill a hole in the bottom
That r32 r32 would be ok as long as the rb26 is fitted

What year and trim Prius Cs are you talking about? My 2013 trim 3 is fine but there are so many different models. I live in Florida so it gets plenty of water testing.

I would tend to agree, but ours have been pretty reliable considering their use. And even in use as a delivery vehicle they still get 38mpg. Which is nuts. The Aevos he had before them got 22!

Obviously I'm being hyperbolic. They're generally perfectly fine appliances.

I owned a Prius C 2015, I never had a single problem like that (I live in Seattle) and had over 80,000 miles on it when I upgraded to the Prius Prime.
That being said, a Toyota dealership might be able to fix that under warranty, especially if you purchased it there and they did not identify the problem prior to selling.

Known issue, just drill a small hole on the side tside drain it. You can see where the lens is separation and water seeps in

Jeeps are notorious for this. For our Grand Jeep, it was simply easier to drill several small holes at the bottom of the lens to let the water drain from rain or car washes.
There were a few times prior it looked like a fish tank so much water was in there, got to give it to Jeep that the wiring somehow survived all that water for the many months it would get flooded.
But yeah, just dr ill some small drain holes, easier that trying to perfectly dry and then seal it.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a defect, this kind of thing usually happens once the foam tail light gaskets that usually sit between the light housing and the bodywork start to dry rot . I f the gaskets fails, then depending on how your car drains water on the body panels, some may seep into the tail lights . Had that issue with my RSX as well, just drained the water out, dried out the tail light housings, and replaced the gaskets with some new OEM ones. S o far it’s been fine for about a year since doing that.

Drill holes to drain, then dry the light by baking it in the oven, seal it, bake once more, and then carry-on with it. Hopefully the chrome plating hasn’t come apart!

My ‘09
Miata, which I bought used,
collected water in one of its tai
l
lights when I first got it.
Water that falls on the trunk lid runs out past the taillight, but there’s a gasket on the back of the tail light
that keeps it out.
All it took to fix it was to get a wrench and tighten the nut that holds the tail
lig
ht assembly on the b
ody about a half-turn; it had been so loose I could t
ake i
t off with my fingert
ips
.
That pressed the gasket tight
so it no longer
leaked
. According to t
he guys at m
iata.net you don’t want
to over-tighten that nut, just get it good and snug.
So
try tightening up the bolts that hold the tail lights on in your Priuses
.

Closed cell foam gasket between taillight housing and body has failed or otherwise been disturbed. Often missed when repairs are made after backing in to a light post, minor rear end bump, etc. In any case its likely very few fasteners to release the taillight assembly and duo it out. Could be as simple as a fastener slightly loose allowing a gap for water ingres or a broken stud on the housing from someone clumsily "booty bumping" the hatch closed and getting the light assembly.

The seal might have come loose. Check the seal of the rear light assembly right next to the edge of the trunk door . It might have come loose after prying the assembly out to replace a burnt out lightbulb for example.

BOTH are obviously cracked. The left photo shows a crack at the left edge, re pa ired with a tran sparent tape. .
Open the trunk hatch and inspect the cable hoses. The plugs that go through metal tend to shrink with age and cease sealing, allowing water inside in carwash and strong rain. Just reseal them with bathroom silicone. Older Subarus have the same problem.

I don’t like that haldex gets lumped in with all the other AWD systems. I don’t think it’s inherently bad, but it’s just so different from full time AWD and there’s so much variance in AWD systems I’m always bothered by the umbrella term of AWD.

I’d think that in order to get 22 MPG out an Aveo, you’d have to have lead feet or be towing a trailer. Or both.

All true. But power to the front+power to the back means AWD, so it counts.

Well pizza delivery drivers do have lead feet typically lol
But really it’s the time the car spends just sitting. Doesn’t make sense to shut the car off just run out and drop off a pizza. Especially when you have the gear or defrost running. That’s where hybrids really shine cuz they’ll shut themselves for that 45 seconds you’re out of the car.

I’d love to see metrics of a pizza driver - e.g.: how many km driven in an average night, average time spend idling, etc. I bet there’s some definite possibilities there for better fuel economy. It’d be interesting to see if any reasonably priced electric cars could do the job. I mean, an Aveo is pretty cheap, but how would something like a Bolt hold up?

I think for us a full electric would makes lots of sense for us. For the 70 deliveries a day we’ll do in each car a 250-300 miles range would be plenty. Mostly because we operate in the 5 miles radius or less. The 9 gallons tank on the Prius usually lasts 2 days.

To answer your question, this is also a defect on the 2005 prius. the cause is a crack in the body frame under the weather stripping on the roof. pull the stripping off, dry the area off and apply some clear silicon sealant. Not too much as you will still need to put the weather stripping back on. This will prevent further leaks but will not fix any damage done like a power short. check your spare tire area and aux battery for water. i hope this helps.
