Tha t looks perfectly fine right?

No wonder why I lost my bottom gears at some point during the day... Not exactly sure how that happened but it certainly wasnt like that before I went bombing down the bike park. No problem though since I will totally fix it the right way!

Obviously that chainring needs replacing anyways given the rust and overall condition. But the “bend it back into shape” fix actually worked for now. Along with a fresh coating of gear oil, the bike no longer chain sucks on every other pedal while in the lower gears! Suc cess!

Thankfully I didnt need those gears for biking downhill so it was no impact to the rest of the trip. Idk how I didnt break anything else (or myself). But overall it was very fun and I will definitely do it again. Even on my cheap hard tail, I had a blast and was well within my safety limits at all times. Sure I was slow but that was more due to my timidness and lack of skill than my hardware. Next time I will probably demo a cool bike but I wont be trying any harder trails just yet!

No c hannel locks or BFH. I’m calling that an inferior repair.

Any idea how you mangl ed the inner ring?

Havent the slightest idea. All I know is that I did a bunch of downhill runs and then did an uphill run to get to a long easy run that I wanted to try without going on the lift all the way up top. And on that uphill the lower set of gears kept chain sucking and so I just climbed in the low gears on the second chain ring without issue. Investigated later and found this. Im guessing it was already a little bent and perhaps the jumps and vibrations did it somehow? Maybe the lift itself whacked it somehow? I was surprised that the bike handled small jumps though, even if it was only a couple inches/tenths of a second of air.

Next time you're up this way we should go biking. We'll rent you a proper one and hit some of the best local trails.

It’s likely a steel ring and the chain tension and your pedalling effort would be enough to do that as the chain and the teeth come together in imperfect alignment...neat fix but that driveline is probably on its last legs.

My vote goes to loading/unloading by liftee.  BB shell have any new damage when you turn the bike upside down?
