I didn’t even realize you could still get an manual accord, and I’ve not seen a current-gen civic coupe on the road either. A bummer to be gone, but unsurprising.

Sorry, but I won’t cry for the manual Accord. On the other hand, the Fit seemed pretty practical, and Civic Si Coupe seemed like good value for the money.

I see very few Civic coupes. Ultimately, I blame the marketing. I never saw a single Civic ad that featured the coupe. Accord manual was very good, but also suffered from lack of publicity. The Fit is a victim of consumer tastes. I understand the decisions from a business perspective but I don’t have to like them.

The manny tranny doesn’t shock me, but the Fit ? Those still seem insanely popular in cities, and most of the competition has dropped out.

I also just realized I hadn’t seen a current Civic Coupe at all. I thought I had, but was wrong.

If Honda had made the Accord a liftback (close enough to a wagon for me) the sport with a manual would be on my list of next potential cars. But, alas, it’s not.

Eh, to me affordable is sub $ 20K....Hyundai Accents, Nissan Micras, the now-gone Honda Fit, Mitsu Mirages, Kia Rios, now-gone Ford Fiestas, and the like...the other problem with crossovers taking over is that whole cheaper end of the market is disappearing and those with lower income are less able to even afford a new car.

I get that everyone says the average purchase price for new vehicles that people have been paying has increased, but those with lower income haven’t gained any money to overcome that.

I’m not poor, but I’m not rich. I love my Accent because of what it is, a basic, reliable, cheap car....but even if I WANTED to go buy a new car, the only ones I could afford easily would be those listed above....and if companies kill cheaper cars like that off, I’m priced out of ever getting a new car....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

How did the Civic coupe last so long? I’ve actually seen a good amount of car seats in the back of 2-door Civics, quite a few family cars being the 2-door.

The Fit will be missed.

Totally agree with you. I consider myself as doing well financially and I could not imagine comfortably affording a 25k new car plus insurance. I don’t know how other Americans do it. I don’t have kids, I drive a 1998 Lexus es300. Maintenance is easy, parts are affordable and it never breaks. I enjoy life with the money I save by not buying a new car.

Sooner or later, someone is going to come in and plug that gap. There was kind of a boom in companies trying to offer cheaper, more basic cars during the Great Depression, so as the pandemic restrictions stretch into 2021 and 2022 and maybe beyond, we could see a similar trend.

Also, the easiest way for a new company to enter the market has always been to hit the established players where they ain’t, which is increasingly the low priced end. As more companies retreat from the segment, the more opportunity there is for someone from, say, Malaysia, or India, or China to come in and claim it, like Yugo did in the late ‘80s.

Now they’ll *definitely* have to pry my 2006 Accord V6 sedan with the 6-speed manual from my cold, dead hands. It’s no BMW, but with the hefty sway bars from an Acura TL-S bolted on it’s a damn fine daily.

That’s used though. Our neighbours have one, cool cars :)

I’m talking about NEW cars for under 20K....they seem to be a dying trend. Especially as things start going all-EV....I’m not anti-EV, but at the present people on lower incomes could NEVER afford one. Things like the Leaf, Kona EV and Kia Rio EV here in Canada start at like $42k new!

Th e real reason is profit margin on the Fit vs the HRV or whatever the fuck they call their mini crossover.

Plus the crossover emissions are going to be way easier to hit in the coming years.

This is true....all the EV startups...Rivian, Faraday, etc, etc have all been aiming at expensive EV SUVs and trucks though :(

...and I know the market is demanding tings like crossovers, trucks and SUVs compared to small cars in North America, but it just sucks for those of us that don’t WANT or need them.

I’m coming off a bit ‘old man’, I know, but, like I was saying to Borsuq earlier today, I worry cars are just becoming ‘appliances’ and that’s it, which saddens me. Yes, I know you can’t compare the performance or the like, but I think with current cars, people can still ‘have fun’ with whatever they drive and cars still have a little bit more individuality between brands, but I fear we’re losing that too ...

I’m Canadian, so things are even a little bit more expensive here.

I still live at home and have no real expenses other than a little bit of rent to mom every month and contributing to groceries and stuff. I’m here because I am saving up for a house, but almost all the income I have, I put into the bank for that huge future purchase, with a bit on the side to keep for gas and car maintenance and the like and a TEENY TINY bit I put aside once and awhile to give myself...(well, when there isn’t a COVID pandemic...) a little ‘me time’ (going to see a movie in the theatre) or a little gift to myself (a new computer game or eating out once and awhile or the like).

BUT, I’m a substitute teacher and, try as I might, still haven’t found a permanent job yet...so my income can be very varied from week to week if I don’t pick up a long-erm sub position or a Term position, or even several days during a given week. Considering the cost of a house and the fees associated with purchasing it...the furniture and upkeep and the like, there’s no way in hell I’ll be buying a new car....even a cheap one as I mention, for a LLLLllllOOoooOOooooNNNnnNNNnNnNNNnGGGGGGGgggGGggggg time...

The new Fit was unveiled October last year, and Honda stated that it wouldn’t be sold in the U.S., probably due to declining sales. Availability in Canada is unconfirmed, but unlikely.

It’s really too bad though, the new one is a lot sharper and styled more cleanly.

The next Civic is supposedly being readied for 2021, as according its typical life cycle.

May not matter if they were pissed off. A 1% take rate is pretty similar to the current overall manual take rate. Granted you’d expect it to be somewhat higher on the cars that actually offer a manual, but probably not much higher on non-sports cars. I think Kia said a few years ago that the take rate on their compacts was like 2-3% (and some of that is probably just people buying the cheapest new car they can get, which doesn’t exactly apply to the Accord).

I haz a sad.

I sort of blame the car companies & dealers though. I’ve tried finding a manual Accord on the local lots a few times. Nope, nada. Not a single one to be found. It’s almost like they never wanted to make them or sell in the first place.
