If I had to guess, I’d say 1/4 of Volvo 240s built between 1986-1993 have a non-functioning odometer. It’s usually due to broken gear teeth (replacement kits are available and easy to install), but sometimes, as in my case, it’s a warped circuit board with a broken trace. Above 95F it works great.
Anyway, the other day I stumbled across this ‘86 or ’87 240. Even from 30 ft it was let down by some of the plastics fading and those dreadful 2-piece hubcaps.
The odometer showed 144,500 km (89K miles) though. Is it correct? A closer inspection was needed.
Paint was shiny with no clear coat peeling. Almost no chips on the leading edge of the hood. Every piece of trim is there. Front headlight had some weird spider cracks.
Glorious minty cloth seats.
Rear shelf was hardly faded and the seat belt cover had only just starting to rot. Nice.
Not sure what’s up with the seat belts missing the red release button.
Elderly owned and original windshield.
I’d say the mileage is correct. Sweet. Too bad it wasn’t for sale.

All of that interior plastic, aside from a very few select pieces (all of them black), is brittle AF. Don’t stare at it too hard - it WILL crack. Even things you don’t touch that often will still crack. This applies even to those examples that don’t suffer the south - 240s that have spent their entire existence in New England & the PacNW will exhibit this sort of failure.
Source: have an ‘87 with the tan interior, the nth of many, all from either librul elite corners of ‘murica.

Forgot to mention, it had both map pockets intact in original dark brown!

Amazing! Although the dark brown plastics hold up better than the tan plastic bits, door pockets of all flavors suffer physical stress from dopes who push doors open with a foot.
As much as I’m not a fan of automagic transmissions, the AW70 & its variants in these/740s/940s are some of the best sorted/matched to their respective powerplants. I’d buy one like this in a heartbeat for $5k or less.

I respect the guts it takes to photograph a stranger's car that well on a residential street. Great reasoning, Mr. Holmes.

Quick way to know if the odometer is working is to look at the trip odometer. If it says a number that is not 000.0, it’s likely that the odometer works.

All Volvos of that period were like that, you could almost hear the interior plastics biodegrading in my 1991 940 Turbo when it was barely a decade old. Everything just bleached white and crumbled to powder like so much 1970s dog poop.

Yes, the 8 redblocks I’ve owned (mostly ‘76-‘89 240s, 1 ‘93 940) have made that rather clear.
I’m a cat guy though, no dogs.
