Lightest available all-mountain. 27.5" preferably, but that said I don’t exactly know what size you are...

How gnarly are you going to get?

You need to go pretty damn fast through things to make the most of a true downhill bike, premium on the site. I would probably go with the slayer, operator, demo 8,  or process. Do you have to reserve ahead of time or can you go in the shop to see what fits a little nicer and ask questions?

I would try the Megatower or the Kona Process. Coil shocks and dual crown forks might make me feel more spicy than my insurance premiums and monthly mortgage payment would allow .

But that’s just me. I’m old and am prone to do dumb shit.

Careful - some rental companies are assessing penalties on Versa rentals if you don’t damage them, or at least return them late.

And if it survives the park torch it so it can burn in hell with it’s brethren.

Demo 8 or santa cruz V10. 27.5 wheels are going to be a bit better in the corners and for sending, 29 if there is a lot of chunder. IMO if you are going to do more than 4 or 5 laps the brakes and suspension on an enduro bike like the megatower will be out classed by the terrain fairly quickly. There is a lot of room for error on a legit DH bike.

And I say this from experience. I took my 2018 specialized stumpjumper to a legit bike park and roasted my brakes in 5 runs, like the rotors turned color and I had to replace them! Also even with a dropper I would have liked more room on the back of the bike for the jumps and steep sections. My front fork a RS Yari worked pretty well but eventually got packed up from so many stutter bumps and the hand pump got very very bad. A true 180mm travel  mushy dual crown fork would have been very welcome as well as Code brakes.

Get one of the full downhill options. They’re the same price as the enduro models, and..... you’re going to a downhill bike park. You don’t need the pedaling capabilities of the enduro bike, since the lift will be taking you to the top of the hill. Right tool for the job.

my level of gnarly is ‘stay on the right side of the handlebars’ gnarly.  I won;t be doing 20' gaps but i will get some air here and there.   I think you have to reserve first to minimize time inside and contact.

What’s the difference between Extremely Difficult and Most Difficult?

Kinja'd!!!

Is Most higher than Extremely? I would expect so, but both terms are often used to represent the ultimate condition. I guess I’m expecting too much.

As for what bike, I’m no longer into gnarly drops and jumps, so I’d go for the Kona, simply because I’ve never ridden a Kona for any distance and I’d like a chance to sample their bikes.

I'd take the megatower unless you are going on a lift service ride.

thanks for the legit response. I feel like brakes will be important. i dont see a lot of ‘sen ding it’ as I’d like to make it home. Probably some good agg ressive riding. I was thinking a 27.5 would be good. I have a 29er and i feel like it loses some agility with the larger wheels but they are awesome for getting over stuff.

i think the difference of most difficult and extremely difficult is the difference of when you fall if you break both legs or both arms .

Just did my first downhill day a few weekends ago. I bought a full face helmet and rented the full upper body armor and knee/shin guards. Thought it was overkill until I went off the side of one of the larger jumps shoulder checked a small tree... shook it off.

I would spend some time looking at geometry charts and how the bikes are set up instead of pursuing any of way of deciding. A bike that fits and is fun to ride will always be more fun and leave you in better condition afterwards. If your rental bike is a POS when you go to pick it up.  M ake adjustments based off what you know about the rest of your options and how they should be set up.

That said, I would look at the $120/day DH trio of bikes and work up to cleanly bottoming out the suspension before considering going for anything in the Premium DH category.

I personally would reserve a GT Fury , smile real nice at the counter, and then roll out to my vehicle where I’d keep the tool box open until I felt confident it was safe and set up the best it could be for my own usage.

You really can’t go wrong there unless you plan on doing a bunch of pedaling. I’d go process or megatower. They fit my riding best and I sure do like Konas.

You can be like me and just take a hardtail through the bike park. I didnt die and the bike isnt completely broken so its fine! Ive been down worse trails locally so it was actually pretty good. I will probably rent a bike next time though since it might be more fun lol. Id just pick whatever has full suspension for cheapest really.

i’;ve done both. If you had the chance to drive Leguna Seca, would you bring your (hypothetical) 2010 Mustang with a V6 or a 2020 McL aren?

Well in the same regard, I would want to take the Mustang since it would be of zero cost (other than consumables). The McLaren would cost a boatload to rent instead. Assuming I have good tires on the stang, it would be plenty fun enough. That said, it’s because it’s $100 plus per day for a good rental at the mountain. Whereas I could also rent locally and get $50 for two days for a similar bike. That would be something to consider for sure!
