Kinja'd!!!

Got this light from the dump. The reflector is all scratches and it has these alligator clip wires. Going to replace the wires with a cord from an old vacuum.

Kinja'd!!!

Test fitting new cable. Tight fit and the knot should keep it getting yanked out.

Kinja'd!!!

Unsolder the old and then solder on the new.

Kinja'd!!!

My light begins to shine.

Kinja'd!!!

Getting hammered.

Kinja'd!!!

That finish tho

Kinja'd!!!

Wire wheeled the reflector.

Kinja'd!!!

Polished the reflector as much as I was willing to.

Kinja'd!!!

All together

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s an on/off for you guys.

Google tells me this is a Harry Potter reference.

Nice! I have one of these old school drop lights, and it’s great. I put a rough  service incandescent bulb into it during the winter. It helps keep me warm in my unheated garage.

Google is correct.

That’s a serious top tip!

I need a tougher bulb for sure.

the alligator clips indicate it was originally designed for 12v car battery connection?

I think I still have burn scars from one of those things from back in the day. Incandescent bulbs are hot!

They look like a home brew solution to me. If not they had come off and very poorly put back on.

Got me an LED bulb to keep the heat down.

I noticed. Very smart move.

They may have been using it as a test light as well. My dad had a regular light bulb socket, hooked up to two wires with alligator clips that he used as a test light as a mechanic in the 70's. I think I may actually have it laying around in my garage, now that I think about it.

O/T, but I saw this today and thought you’d get a kick out of it.

Very cool! You did a great job with that. Restoring even an old and cheap thing like this warms my heart.

Secondary benefit of the LED drop light is that if you let it live up to its name and drop it, the filament doesn’t break. I’ve had the same cheap LED in my drop light for years.

Yeah moving around isn’t great for filaments let alone being dropped. The end of this bulb is glass so I expect it to not last long. I broke on making this so that’s when I found out they were glass and not plastic.

I 100% do on my forearms from working on our 4Runner as a kid. I was an early adopter of LED based trouble lights. My wife bought me a CAT light from Costco A few years ago . It’s ridiculously bright. An odd shape sure, but so bright. It gets hot. But not melt/burn hot.

Thanks!

I grabbed it for the alligator clips. S omeone had dropped off a bunch of wiring at the dump and I’m regretting not grabbing everything there. It looked like somebody cleaned out some old guy’ s stash of things-I- might- need.

This will be a big upgrade from my fluorescent harbor freight drop light. The led bulb is nice and bright.
