These Camaro ones, I like. What’s your take? If smoked taillights are situationally acceptable for you,  at what point do you hit the brakes?

Reminds me of the 812 Superfast taillights, so that can’t be bad, right?

Doesn’t Porsche have black or darker taillights as an option too?

I assume factory would be ok. I despise the homemade tint

edit: I want to add from a design aspect it looks good, just hate the complete loss in functionality from hack jobs.

My Camaro is massively flattered by that Ferrari comparison, hahahaha.

Porsche has been doing the smoked clear taillights on 718 Cayman/Boxster models. I think that coincided with going to 4-cylinder turbo engines too.

Yours are perfect, where the tint is embedded in the plastic and/or a black chrome reflective interior. Drawing the line is one of those, you know it when you see it, sort of things

Fieros don’t just count, they’re the best! I want to get one someday (for many reasons)

I like tinted tailights if they’re factory. Spray on tinting with reduced visibility makes no sense to me.

Kinja'd!!!

Mine aren’t OEM tinted but the brightness is the same as OEM.

They did offer blue for the 1987 model year

It depends on how it is done...

A mildly tinted lens with a dark housing, and a recessed reflector, or LEDs that don’t require a reflector can look dark when off, but pretty much full brightness when on.

That camaro lens is not tinted much, because you can see the silver strike-through, and the reflector inside... the design of the fixture just doesn’t take in and reflect much ambient light, but not likely to hinder functional light output.

Heavily tinted lenses actually cut and waste light output, and reduce visible effectiveness. Although mild smoke tint can be overcome by modern, quite bright, and properly designed LED output that is FAR more than incandescent output without much of any filtering at all, or just red color filtering.

I agree so much with this. They’re really cool from the factory, but heinous (imo) as a mod. So many idiots. The rattle can stuff is the worst

I dig the tinted look, but ONLY if it doesn’t compromise safety. Pretty sure you can trust OE tint to allow sufficient brightness, so no worries there. It’s when somebody goes crazy with t he spr ay tint without upgrading the bulbs that I start to worry.

Factory smoked is bad ass. And at least they still work.

Factory is fine, you know the bulbs will be bright enough to be visible, unlike aftermarket solutions that just make things unreasonably dim.

These and the Volvo 850's are the perfect wagon design. So clean and balanced!

It bugs me so much.

Kinja'd!!!

The *ahem* spoiler *coughs again* is mis-aligned on the other side too, but in the opposite direction. GM spent all the budget on chassis & powertrain development; aesthetic quality-control is clearly not a priority.

Worth it for the powertrain & chassis!

I wish Chevy would make a new SS sedan with all the good bits from the current Camaro SS. I know the ATS-V is close, but I want a V8!

If Chevy used the Alpha platform for vehicles that weren’t

(a) perceived to have poor visibility

(b) considered by Americans to be “grandparent cars”

Then they’d be selling way more. Like, do a RWD Impala with an optional LT1, and offer it as a big coupe too, like Dodge Challenger-sized. Buyers don’t care about “handling” when buying muscle cars, and the Challenger outsells the Camaro 2 to 1.

Cadillacs are unmarketable aside from the Escalade and Camaros are too small for most customers’ preferences. The Alpha chassis is amazing (my 2.0T Camaro is comfortable and gets great mileage, and also zooms at autocross) but it only underpins niche cars.

Yup.

They sell the shit out of the Challenger/Charger! 12-year-old chassis...
