What kind of inconsiderate buffoon parks their car in front of such a fantastic view? Oh, right. . .

Kinja'd!!!

The closest thing to a rural dirt road I could find was this 100 foot span of really rough asphalt

I’ve been trying to explore, but haven’t had much success.

The less industrial, more chic suburbs on the north side. Close to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, pictured.

Why?

You wouldn’t like the total and complete lack of lonely roads here. I’ve tried searching for them and they don’t exist. Suburbs as far as you look in every direction, all of which look the same and all of which are the same density.

It does look pretty sad, but gravel map.com leads me to a few candidates further out: https://gravelmap.com/route/11866-macedonia#14.15/34.1719/-84.6755  and if you’re willing to drive a couple of hours, the Chattahoochee National Forest looks promising:  https://gravelmap.com/route/76075-noontoola-road-fs-58#12.68/34.67206/-84.18985

What a depressing sight. I have no faith in local Jeep and 4x4 owners anymore. That promising section is also a very long ways away. White Georgia is pretty far out there.

Also, gravelmap.com is just what I was looking for to confirm my mor bid suspicions. Dang, that sure blows the case for a 4x4 right out of the water. Curious what your area looks like on that website.

Chattahoochee national forest is wonderful but I haven't spent much time there. The Silver Comet Trail is at least relatively close to me as is the Beltline rail trail.

To be clear, that’s a site for mountain bike enthusiasts, so there might be gravel roads that aren’t captured because they’re not bike-friendly...but most likely they aren’t there because they’re boring.

Here’s a list of resources I intended to turn into a post for Overland but never got around to.

Atlas Obscura is a great read but not usually great as an Atlas. I'll look into these. It's more just that I don't know where to drive to if I want some peace and quiet away from traffic. Every good road is lined with subdivisions so speed traps, slow drivers, and children in the road are a constant threat. Sometimes you just want a relaxing tranquil drive but I have to resort to walking.

The important thing is you’re exploring. While not entirely the same thing I went to tennessee and kentucky last August and was surprised by how many little roads were paved. I think out here in Colorado any similar roads would definitely be dirt.

Basically. For whatever reason, the southeast at least, though I suspect most of the Eastern seaboard is similar, has very very few dirt roads even very far away from population centers.

People tend to be closer together and land tends to be divided into much smaller and more irregular lots because of how long people have been running out of room in the east compared to the west I suppose. So you have more people to tax with smaller lots often subdivided by the county or city who also build roads between the lots. I guess the sum total is many fewer dirt roads because people want to live on paved roads and there are constituents on nearly e very road. Less unoccupied government land so less empty space means less need for fire roads. Never really thought about it before.
