Update: After hearing your stories and admiration of the 250 GTO, I thought I should share this - I’ve seen the 250 GTO that’s in this article!

I had planned a trip through C alifornia in 2017 with Car week as the focus. But of course, I couldn’t spend $400 for a C oncours D’Elegance ticket . So I booked my flight from SFO at 11am that S unday . I thought I’d go early and at least go there to see the cars in the parking lots.

So drove around the tiny windy roads in Pebble beach as much as I could. And I saw Ferrari had taken over a villa of sorts.   I parked my car a nd took the bus there. Saw some stunning Ferraris outside and started chatting with another bystander. I showed him my photos from earlier events that he had missed and told him how I really wanted to see a 250 GTO.

As it turns out, it was be Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary. So they brought out 70 vintage Ferraris and took over Hole #1 (I believe) of the course.

He said, “Why don’t we just go in”. I wasn’t sure they’d let me in. But I went with it. We get to an entrance, he flashes his pass and that was it! Walked right in. I couldn’t believe I snuck into the Con cours D’Elegance!

And get this, that space had TWO 250 GTOs! - In the 70 car display. Apparently, there was one more inside the main event.

Unfortunately, it was getting close to 9 and I had to leave to make my flight. So I couldn’t see the rest of the event. T hat was one of the best days of my life. Here’s some more pictures I took!

I know this is a very “basic bitch” response to the favorite car question, but the 250 GTO is my favorite car.

I’m never going to drive it or own it. But I would love to own a replica. A Tempero would be ideal.

I’ve seen one in person, parked next to a viper, and a Zanardi NSX. It was like the other two cars were not even there. I’m usually cool around things like this but I was in the moment the most fan boi I’ve ever been in my life. The 250 GTO is just a fucking amazing design and execution.

I remember a magazine article from the 80's that covered some of the drama surrounding a replica producer (I think he was Swiss). A good story if I recall. I’ll see if I can dig it out. If I find it, I’ll post and give you a bump.

I suppose each case would be open to challenge, but, it seems like this paves the way for basically any vintage car to be replicated, if the original manufacturer isn’t building any current car based on the design, or actively planning to.

Back in the 00's Ralph Lauren lent some of his collection to a museum in Boston, and I dragged my wife (gf, then) up to see it solely because his 250 GTO was there. They also had his testarossa (60s race car, not 80s cruiser), McLaren F1, and his blower Bentley. Amazing, all of them.

but the 250 GTO is my favorite car.

So I guess you’re planning to build a 250 GTO Kit as your summer car?

A friend of my grandfather, Tom Price has a GTO. He also has a whole facility to maintain his cars. He used to own a lot of car dealerships. My grandfather owned an insurance company back in the day, he has been gone a long time so I don’t know how they knew each other. Tom is still alive as far as I know.

This is his office and car maintenance facility, it’s right near San Quentin prison actually! I don’t think he keeps the cars here, I’ve seen the big doors open and only a couple in there at a time, always different.

That’s really neat. Nice photos, too!

Hot take: I’d take the F50 over most of the older Ferraris.

I reached out to a guy who owned a 250 GTO and spoke to him about his experience on facebook about 10 years ago .

He sold his to Ralph L auren and used the money to import Maseratis into Cali and sell them. He’s made a bunch of videos about his experience owning one and enjoying it with his other friends. Here’s one of my favorites.
