I paid off mine in April. Do you look at your bank account every day and think “Wow that’s XXX$s I’m saving every month? I think I’ll keep that”
It’s all f*cking COVID-19's fault! I’m hardly driving and if I did daily, I’d think “Yeah this is nice, I don’t want a change” especially that drive back home from work when I’m relaxed. Also, with the quarantine, everyone- clients/my team is taking it easy so I have more free time which I spend browsing. S omething new pops-up on my Autotrader/Cars.com saved list every week and I start thinking “Wow I can afford that, it would be nice”
I need a distraction. Anyway rant over.

I find tinkering with my current vehicle helps me . O ne of my vehicles is a Wrangler with 70k miles so there’s always something to work on or try to improve.

I was told at a younger age that if you made decent money and had a wife or an accountant, you’d be OK with your finances. You’d do even better if your wife was an accountant.
I have none of those things, but sure enough I have lots of toys.

Well that’s your first mistake right there! I think you need something from England or Italy, built in the 1970s, with two seats. Really anything will do. You’ll never have time to think about a new car again!

If you find a way let me know. When the urge comes I have yet to prevent myself from buying something. The apparent silliness of the used market right now might be enough because I do love a good deal.

Start modding. Light stuff here and there, I’m sure there are thing like stereo upgrades, lighting, interior doodads, a set of new wheels and tires. One of my favorite things is tasteful sticker additions. Whenever I take a road trip, I make sure I get at least a badge of honor or two to stick on a window or something.

I always tell myself that when I buy a car I want, inevitably a car that I want more will pop up right after. So I just constantly wait for that car I want more. It works about 50% of the time

I’m always looking, but I just tend to keep cars for a long time (and I really like the pair I have right now) . Fun to dream about what’s next, though. I have a Dropbox subfolder called “Next” actually.

I love to dream about what comes next but I've pretty much decided I'm not going to take any actions until I either have more cash, more cash, more time, or more cash. All I have to do is look at my bank account and then look up prices of used Cruzes in better condition than mine to realize that no way am I going to get something better than it even if I invested a thousand or two on top of it.

Second: Go full Joe Dirt and tell myself everything is CP

I used to stave it off by buying something cheap and fun, and then selling that and buying something different every few years. It’s not that much money spent, a fun car can be found under $2k, and if you take care of it and maybe even improve it some, it will be worth the same when you go to sell it.
That’s not working now though, I’m deep into a more serious car project, and my garage doesn’t have much more room, so I find myself looking at stuff I’m not ready to buy yet...

I just recently made an account on H emmings and I get daily reminders of listings under 10k. The only thing distracting me enough from buying them is my bank account, and the fact that I couldn’t keep it anywhere... that and videogames, those are cool.

Buy a car you like, and drive it.
Or lease, then you’re effectively stuck and get to deal with it.

A new car every few years can be enough to satisfy, I’ve done it a bit - and many leases have subsidized residuals, so it can work better than buying new (or even late model used) every 5 or so years. As you know, it all depends on depreciation. Something like a 5er is catastrophic, so lease or buy used, unless you’re going to keep it 10+ years. I’ve had a few E-class leases where the payment was less than mere depreciation, and the residual was many thousands above the market value at the end of the term.

I don’t, I am a slave to it.
I want to buy more cars, I could buy more cars, but I shouldn’t buy more cars, so I restrain myself and don’t buy more cars.
Trying to stay sensible kinda sucks. S aving money is nice, but more cars would be nice too. :/

Limit yourself to one rarer car (Under 1000 made) and say that’s the only thing you would get. That’s what I’ve been doing and it’s worked about 8 months for me. I get it all out of my system looking for it basically everywhere in the country on basically every website multiple times a day.

Easy. I put serious thought into how I’m going to pay for it. And then remind myself that I don’t want to. This process has worked for nearly 20 years...
