Some pretty tough anti-lockdown protests in Serbia.

At first, a nti-lockdown protests sounds a bit right-wing and what conspiracy theorists would do, but the story is a bit more complex. As far as I know their government handled the epidemic terribly, causing hospitals to reach full capacity very soon , the staff is extremely overworked, etc. Then president Vui opened up all restrictions (opened bars, football matches, nightclubs... ) just in time for the elections, to then impose a lockdown after clenching the winning votes.

I don’t know enough about this to have anything more relevant to say, if you are interested I’m sure some news sites will help. So I dunno what to think about all this but man, the world sure is going in sane.

People all over the globe are starting to get fed up w ith how the world works .

So an unethical exploitation of unrest resulting in virus susceptible protesting. None of what I just said is acceptable, therefore everyone is insane. Some are just more insane than others.

If you're not insane by now you haven't been paying attention.

Indeed. The ones who aren't are possibly the most worrying.

When this all started, I swear I said that no country can expect to do an extended economic shutdown without eventually suffering violent insurrection and riots, as I recall, I was kind of mocked for it, with the suggestion that we live in a civilized society that wouldn’t regress to such things over a public health emergency.

Well, stay tuned, there are more countries yet to come. The only way to shut down for 3-6-12 months with a reasonably reduced risk of unrest is if you wrote everyone a check for $20k- $80k, depending on how long the lockdown lasted. This is the result of economic uncertainty, and also the complete destruction of any sort of hope for the future. Even when times are tough, people can console themselves with the prospect of getting a better job and pulling themselves up someday, with 75% of businesses at risk of failure and the economy shut down with no definitive date for reopening, that hope, however realistic it was in the first place, is removed entirely. A person who believes they essentially have no future is a dangerous person, since they feel they can afford to live totally in the moment without consequences.

Good to see that riot police are utter pieces of shit the world over.

TEM syndrome delusion will prevent any large scale action in the US (that and many knowing that when it comes down to it, dear leader will permit loss of life to save property).

No, you got it. People didn’t exactly like the president before the elections anyway - now that he basically brought the virus back in order to get another mandate, people are fed up. It’s not so much an anti-lockdown protest, it’s more of  an anti-Vui protest.

Who voted for him anyway? Is it a rural right-wing majority like here?
Our right wingers pay people from BiH on buses to come and vote. Or do you think the Serbian elections are a bit rigged as well?

What’s TEM syndrome? Google isn’t helping me, it just shows some microscope isotopes and electrons and stuff.

Anyhow, I’m surprised that even these protests which you did have were so large. I thought people in the US were more afraid to protest than here in Europe, since the police are so extremely militarized - I have to admit, I would have to think twice to stand in front of those hummers, teargas granade launchers and military-spec police teams.

I think this is a perfect time to see how much we depend on income to even survive. This notion seem on the nose, but I think we take it for granted until we experience something like this. Even the 2008 crises wasn’t as stressful mentally or psychologically.

A good example here was Dubrovnik, a lovely city which is so full of tourists that you have to literally wait in line to get into the old town. God help you if you live there. But now in covid-times, the whole city is empty, even after the restrictions are lifted. It’s eerie. And with the whole summer season ruined, most of the restaurants, bars, shops and apartment-renters are folding up and closing their businesses... For years there were discussions about how much do we REALLY depend on tourism, and how healthy that is. Now we have the answer...

They’re rigged AF. The only people that actually support him are retired people that lived their whole lives under Tito. Anybody born in the sixties or later hates the guy, because he’s a western puppet literally selling the country off to foreign interests... not to mention  the whole Kosovo thing.

It’s kind of a conglomerate of old ideas and misquotes - “Temporarily Embarrassed Millionaire” - the belief that one is just a step away from striking it rich, that they’ll become a bigshot if they just pull those bootstraps a little harder, so they are unwilling to challenge the status quo or increase any tax responsibility on the top few (as they think they are on the cusp of being wealthy, themselves) . Although economic mobility in the US now trails other developed nations, many drones still think riches are just a step away - never let facts get in the way of beliefs.

I think in the US, the unwillingness to actually stand up out of economic fear is more than that of physical intimidation from low accountability para military police and small man syndrome 3%ers.

So the belief that a millionaire lifestyle is just around the corner - basically the American D ream is a promise given out to all Americans, that’s helping keep the status quo.

Exactly. And that dream is still attainable  - just maybe not as possible as in the past, not as likely as some claim, and just as likely in areas that are “socialist” per those who believe in trickle down fantasy.
