Yes, they were as tasty as they look. BA’s best recipe
So moral choice time. I have a guy lined up on the bike with cash in hand , ready to buy. All seems okay at first, but then he asks if I am including a helmet in the sale. Sure, I’ve got a few extra laying around I could give .....
“ WAIT, so you don’t have a helmet??” I asked
Turns out it would be his first bike. My immediate gut reaction is to tell him hell no, go get yourself a 250 or some low displacement cruiser. This is definitely not a bike for a beginner.
But, if I tell him that, he will just walk, and go buy some other OP bike from the next guy with a pulse and no conscience .
So do I take the (presumably) easy sale, try to teach the guy as best I can, knowing I may have sold the guy his figura tive coffin? Or tell him to take a hike, and keep dealing with tire kickers?

Maybe both? Make the sale, but talk him through the safety best practices of the bike. If he doesn’t have his endorsement then ask him how he intends to get it home and maybe have an idea where MSF classes are held.
I had an Eclipse GS-T before I got the Evo. A well todo dad bought it for his 17 year old. We had a quiet talk about the car and what it was capable of. It wasn’t the fastest thing on the road, but a 17 year old could get into trouble with it. The dad was appreciative and went through with the purchase. All I could do with out halting the sale.

Just sell him a helmet for a few extra bucks, what’s the worst that could happen?
(*looks at user name*)
AW HÆLL NAW, that’s indeed too much for a starter bike. Unless he weighs >300 lbs, or plans to store it while developing skills on another bike.
Still, he’s buying the ticket, he should know what he’s getting into. T
alk to him when he goes to see the bike and ask him about his plans, maybe he's not completely loony.

I sold a suburban back in the day... to a guy who ran a junk yard. At first I was like.. well. he knows what he’s buying. he will treat it rough, but at least he will have parts.
Then I learn it’s for his brother’s sister’s wife inlaw cousin... well you get the idea...
So the girl shows up... walks right past the suburban without glancing at it once... cigarette in hand...
My heart bled for years...
I get what you’re saying. When I was selling suburban, I HAD to sell it. I had no space. if you can keep the bike and sell it to the right person. Do that. If you are hard pressed... I guess sell it.
Look at it this way, would a dealer have same feelings as you are? Looking for the right buyer? No. They would just sell it to first joe shmoe. But this is your baby. Thing you’ve thought about in the middle of the night...

I would ask if he’s planning to ride it away. If he says yes, I would ask if he has a license. If he says no, I would tell him someone licensed needs to drive the bike off your premises. If he’s like I have no one else tell him to trailer it. If he’s like I can’t, at that point I would walk away. I would think he legally can’t indemnify you if you knew he had no license and you let him drive it away anyways. If he crashed it head long into someone’s Ferrari, he has no insurance because he has no license (and presumably no registration) , and they’re gonna be coming after you for payment . When your insurance finds out you let someone unlicensed drive your bike, they’re gonna deny coverage and you’re gonna be fucked.
I’m not always a stickler for that sort of thing but this seems like excessively risky to me. But if he’s like “yeah no problem my buddy Jeff will ride it” then who cares.

Just remember once you ask, you can’t un-ask. Make a decision on whether it’s material to your sale. If it’s not, don’t ask.

Its my 04 Duc ST3. Just not ridding it much anymore and we will be moving in a couple years. Not hanging up the leathers permanently , just until we live somewhere is less homicidal traffic

Maybe my 2 cents will be worthless, but I say keep it.
A) you know the beast
B) you will ride again, why not your trusted bike?
C) you won’t have to live with the pain of knowing you sold your baby to some yahoo who wrapped your baby and his face around a tree in fist 4 seconds

Trust me, it’s been a painful decision but I mainly came to it because when I do get back into it, I will be looking for something newer anyway (abs, traction control etc is a huge want) and I’ve already had to ship it twice, not really wanting to do it again. Its also getting up there in miles, 34K right now, after the next ~ 10K I’d be looking into a rebuild. I love it like an old dog, but her time has come

I would agree with notsomethingstructural, ask if he has his motorcycle endorsement, and if he doesn’t tell him you aren’t letting an unlicensed rider take it off your premises. But mainly that is a CYA move.
Beyond that, what he does with it is out of your hands, and if he wants to faceplant into a tree, that’s his business. Darwin in action.

Imo that’s the best choice. Harm reduction. If you just close the sale because it’s “2 fast 4 u junior!” Then he’ll just be jaded and buy somewhere else (with every moment he doesn’t crash cementing his confidence that that other guy was wrong/lame).
I think giving him the advice with the sale has a lot better chance of not falling on deaf ears.

Make absolutely sure the sale is documented and you keep the plate. Two copies, one for him, one for you. That way if he does stuff it into the back end of a turd truck, you can’t be held liable.
My cousin bought my mom’s old car, didn’t bother to get new plates, then drove it up and down a turnpike for a few months. It was one where they take a picture of your plates and send you the bill instead of making you stop to pay a toll. When they finally sent the bill to my mom, she wasn’t happy.

I n cali, the plate stays with the vehicle for as long as its registered here. When you sell it, you fill out a form on the DMV website to document when the transfer was done. So it releases me from liability

Sounds like a dilemma for sure. I’m not 100% on the 250-300cc for everyone to start . For me there’s a lot of variables. I know a person that has started on a Bandit 1250 because he’s 6’7... I started on a brand new 650.
Is it a kid (like under 25 )? There’s no way I’d let anyone ride off on anything without the moto license or proper gear . It leaves on a trailer and I film this , you want to unload it around the corner and shake hands with the devil fine, but I did my due diligence. And I’d definitely tell buddy to take a motorcycle safety course if he does buy.

You can’t save someone from themselves. So don’t feel bad about it. Give advice and leave it at that.
