250 HP, 320 TQ with 93 octane. Good.
Only available with Six-Speed Automatic transmission. Bad
I’m just not sure, this doesn’t move my pulse much. I know Mazda is trying to appear as up market nowadays but I feel like they could’ve put a bit more effort in making this feel special.
I’d love to drive one when it comes out to see because I’m not the biggest fan of this motor in the cars. It felt more like a diesel than a gas motor in the Mazda6 - just not as fun as say an Accord 2.0t. They work great in the Crossovers, though.
Anywho, I guess we should just be happy a more powerful option is soon available. Even if it doesn’t being the excitement prior Speed3's did.

I guess this is a great quick commuter. Not really a hot hatch. It has plenty of power, but chassis/transmission and arguably looks are too mundane.

Just maybe they're edging closer to a Speed3. Aero bits, hotter tune (because factory turbo), suspension bits. Hot take: no manual. Sorry not sorry. The current hatch has a manual option but why wouldn't the new turbo offer it?

Torque is where it's at when all you have is a race from one traffic light to the next. Or one corner to the next...

It’ll require 93 octane? That’s going to be a dealbreaker for some people. Most people are adverse to putting 93 in a daily driver.

It can run 87 with a power decrease of 221 hp and 310 tq. Not too bad.

Yep, I love the low end torque of my GTI but also that it can rev out near 7k.

It could be that this makes too much torque for the manual they have or something like that. I think they’d rather just sell crossovers like most nowadays and not put the effort/money in for a true hot hatch

Ill wait to see pricing, but I am very interested in having this replace my STI. At this point, I'd like a bit more refinement and comfort. Plus I want a hatch again. If I had the choice, I'd buy a manual but the automatic, at least in the CX5 was nice. And I still have my RX8 for autocross, track days, and just those days that I want to row my own.

Good thing they’re doing both the sedan and hatchback. 320 lb/Ft is gonna be great around town, I’ve driven the 6 turbo and it pulls hard! (until about 5000 rpm) Of course I am used to NA 6 cyln engines so it was a refreshing change
I wont consider this a GTI/WRX or other hothatch/sedan competitor. They’re going for an alternative to the A-Class and A3. Hopefully the pricing is right

It doesn’t require 93. It will run on 87 with 227Hp/310 torque just like other applications in their lineup. You don’t need to use premium unless you want to.

Yeah it might be a good median for some like yourself. That was my train of thought going from my older Si to the GTI. I wanted more refinement while still having some excitement.

I remember when the S4 had a 250hp twin turbo V6 and really wanting one. Sad about the manual but still good news as far as I’m concerned. I just hope they do some AWD tuning and it sends a decent amount to the back. It could be a really fun car.

This seems likely. They do have Skyactv-MT but the design goal of that was fuel economy and lightweight, so it probably couldn’t handle the engine.

Yeah the 6 turbo does pull slowly, I wasn’t the biggest fan of how it died after 5,000. I think you’re right on who they’re going after with this and too hope the price isn't crazy.

Exactly, it’s a ton of torque and better than no turbo3!

I ts a weird car for Mazda and the USA , since it more or less competes with the luxury compact segment that we really don’t get here in the USA
But I get it, and I’m kinda interested for when they hit dealer lots. Its for people who have gotten a bit older and want to upgrade from a sporty car to something a bit nicer, more comfortable /practical that is still quick but don’t want a big car (also its for salesmen to upsell to people who have to have the “nicest version”) .
Its a very specific market to sell to, so I hope it does well, I might want to pick one up used in 5 years.

Yep exactly. I get them wanting to go up market however if that’s the case they’ll need to have a good lease on it (which I doubt will happen). For a small company I know they don’t want to take crazy risks but I don’t see this selling that much.

My wife will want this. I may buy her one in a year or two and start DDing her 2015 CX-5 . She loves the CX-5, but complains that it’s too slow. I think it scoots along just fine, but my full size crew cab with the 4.8 and highway gears is slow as dogshit. I'll never sell it though, I love that truck so much.

My parents have one. My flogging of the car on properly twisty roads revealed that, generally, if you’re over 5k, you’re probably in the wrong gear. In general, I agree with the assessment. They’re quick, but not fast, which is probably another way of saying what Mazda made with the turbo 6 is a very good entry-level luxury car and not a sports sedan like some folks may have been expecting.

Definitely. They’re impressive how luxurious the updated 6 is. It’s not exactly my preferred motoring experience but I think it could be good for many people.

That’s an interesting thought but a B5 S4 can absolutely smoke this (provided it’s still running properly after all these years). Those were some vigorous ponies in that 2.7T, getting to 60 in the low fives (with a brutal launch). I wouldn’t put them in the same performance league.
This will probably be a really nice, not that fun car.

Yea but who is going to do those brutal launches to their actual car? Those test car launches, especially manual awd turbo ones, will wreck cars.
I’d bet will all that torque it will be just as fast.
EDIT: just found this on car and driver, brutal indeed.
Rev the six-cylinder engine to 5000 rpm in first gear, dump the clutch, and the Audi surges forward with real authority, zipping to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds

That quarter mile is still faster than a current GTI, which I don’t think the Mazda is going to outrun. No Mazda model with this engine so far has been particularly quick, and even if it is seriously quick it doesn’t seem like it’ll be as fun as even a GTI. I do agree it’s still overall great news.

Put a manual in it and it may be enough to draw my attention away from the styling of the rear 1/3 ( on the hatch) looking like a dog taking a poo for long enough to test drive one. I don’t see the purpose of an automatic warm/hot -hatch
