Kinja'd!!!

I’ve owned five 4 cylinder cars, three of which have been turbocharged, and the largest of which was 2.5L. All have been and still are fun in their own way (Okay, maybe not the Astra, but first car sentiments.....And the ST’s honeymoon phase wore off real quick), but I’m kinda getting bored of this trend in my life and finally wanna step in to the world of bigger engines and more cylinders for daily driving.

Kinja'd!!!

Problem is that my Mustang too damn good at what it does. 380hp and 410tq, averaging 23-26mpg typically, and a driving experience that makes every daily drive great , nothing else could compare nearly 4 years ago, and not much can easily today in my mind . And I don’t want to replace it because “I bought the wrong Mustang” or that nonsense, I’ve just grown tired of having conceptually the same engine so many times. T he Mustang was exactly what I wanted and even with issues here and there, it’s never disappointed me. It’s a tough act to follow in nearly every aspect.

My hope is that after I finish restoring the ‘64.5 by the end of this summer, I’ll have some spare coin to go with trading the Mustang in on something used that’s no more than $25k with a V8, RWD and manual as a new daily driver . So my thoughts are on an S550 GT (this platform is just great imo), a 6th gen SS (probs the most expensive of the options) at the high end, or an S197 GT (IF I can get past the live axle, and fewer creature comforts than I’ve got now) at the low end. I’d thought about 6 cylinder cars, but they always end up being P-cars (two is enough and I don’t need a third), and while I’m a fan of the V6 1LE........Ehhhhhhhh.

Of course this is all forward thinking and who knows what things’ll be like next year. Gotta get through this year first.

You don't want to take this too fast. Go for a 5 cylinder Audi tt (RS I believe I has 5?).

C5Z06. Its way faster than a S550 GT coz it weighs 3300lb on the scales and the LS6 will do 27mpg highway as well. Test drive one, theres a bunch of them around the country.

I’d thought about it or a C6 for a second (C5 more so) , but the interior is a very VERY hard sell coming from an S550. I can’t ignore the performance per dollar, but I can’t ignore the Mattel interior just as well.

I also prefer the hatch on the non-Z06.

But aren’t those as archaic as a Challenger? I’d thought they were so old that it wasn’t a fair fight for them against the current crop of sporty cars. The V6 is a high revving engine, but every exhaust sounds like a Wookie mating call.

That said, everything I know about these I’ve read about online, and that isn’t much.

I don’t wanna touch those rod bearings......I can put up with a lot of German DIY preventative maintenance, but this, the V10 rod bearings, and the Audi V8 timing chains are past the line I’ve drawn in my head.

I’ve read that the 4.6 without the track pack is a dog. The 5.0 sound is subjective (I like both), but the 4.6 is less power and torque than what I’ve got now tuned, and only equal to what my Boostang made stock. That’s not doing it many or any favors.

That said, yours is very clean!

Yeah I mean I had a bad time with mine but a bunch of other Oppos have had/are having the opposite experience. I’m partial to my E46 M3 and am currently DDing it. I was thinking of suggesting it, but it seems like you’re shooting for newer. Rod bearings are still something you do on the E46 but its not “fuckyou” expensive.

Cadillac ATS-V? Or a previous gen CTS-V? Both nice interiors and the CTS has the correct number of cylinders.

I had a first gen CTS-V and I loved it. The interior wasn’t as nice as the gen 2, but much much better than the comparable corvette.

No replacement for displacement as they say. I had a short spell where I drove an S4 with the 3.0T engine and it was a blast, but I pined for my v8s again.

Yes they are old. But they are one of the few true two seat sports cars out there. I have driven the 350, not the 370 and I can honestly say I was underwhelmed. It drove great but didn’t have the ragged edginess I am used to experiencing in my 240Z. The 240z at 150 HP is still one of the most engaging cars I have ever driven.

The nismo version is the only one worth having. I spent some time with one on track and they perform pretty decent. Problem is at that point you're looking at $30k. So there's plenty of better options.

You’re correct, without the track pack it has 3.31 gears, 3.73 with it so the regular ones feel terribly slow . Its why back then it could outrun the challenger and nearly ti e the Camaro in 0-60 times and not get embarassed by either in the quarter mile. After having a heavily tuned boosted car (Mazdaspeed3 stage 2+) I realized anything more than 300 horsepower is useless in everyday driving.

Thanks for the compliment!

When I just purely think of what Ive wanted in a daily on paper lately ; an ecoboost checks the boxes.

However what I find far more dream worthy, and what I want you to buy for my oppo reading enjoyment, is an ATS-V(you decide on coupe or sedan ). It’d be tough to find one for $25K but $30-33k is the low end and I think that’ll come down some over the next year. Slightly smaller than the Mustang, turbo V6, manual, Camaro in a suit. Magnetic ride. Pretty reliable from what I’ve read. Still not abhorrent fuel economy.

Oh damn, I forgot about the ATS-V! Those cars are too damn cool to be Cadillacs (the coupe especially, but I wouldn’t say no to the sedan). Since I’ve already accepted any car I want next will have abysmal fuel economy in comparison, anything that can attain at least  20mpg average is acceptable. I’d imagine manuals would command a big enough premium to be well outta target budget.

That’s true. At this point in my very short life, I’ve determined for myself anything around 400hp is perfect for me, and less than 300hp isn’t gonna do it for me. Anything more than 400 is just bonus points. But I didn’t know that about the 2010s! I thought they were slouches from 2005-2010.

WRXs were briefly on the radar as a strange outlier, as I’ve also never owned a flat-4 or AWD car. But those motors have concerning Achilles’s Heels if I ever felt the itch for more power; the old 2.5 and newer 2.0 equally to me.

And I don’t think I’ll ever go back to FWD at this point.

I don’t think I’m that much of an outlier. I’m the 2nd owner, live in a not super cold place, and always let it come up to temp before I get on it.

I’m of the opinion that some of these motors were doomed from the start due to the tight tolerances, heavy oil, and errors in assembly (over- tightening bolts). I must’ve gotten one of the good ones (others have gone 200k+).

That said, I probably will get them replaced preventively at some point...

Not that i wouldnt like 400 hp especially up here in Denver but even with 315 to it feels more than adequate. I think my biggest complaint and this goes for the 5.0 too is low end torque. These engines just arent as good at making it as like t he LS or Hemis are. Midrange and the sound that comes out the borla stingers is intoxicating.
