This weekend’s adventures brought us to Rainer National Park again. We hiked up the Wonderland trail from the parking lot at the Box Canyon.
Strava statistics are as follows:
Distance: 12.96 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,622 feet
Time: 4 hours, 31 minutes
We got to the park entrance around 8 AM Sunday morning , and it was completely empty; quite the surprise compared with last week midday. The quiet prompted us to snap a quick detour through the Grove of the Patriarchs.
The bridge thankfully had no line, and we were able to run back and fourth across it.
The road was closed right before the tunnel, allowing us to run though it shouting like F1 cars .
Box canyon.
You can see ( what I believe to be) Mt. Adams a ways into our ascent. We met an older couple (serious overnight hikers) on our way up who quietly scoffed at our lack of equipment (we both have trail running shoes, so not that bad...) , and the man suggested that this mountain was Mt. St. Hellens, but I’m not so sure.
Flowers.
I found my new favorite past ime at the top of the peak: skiing with normal shoes; it’s loads of fun.
We a re not alone...

And... this is why people put up with the insane cost of living in the NW.

Awesome pictures! There are some pretty good roads around Rainer. 410 and 123 to the north and the east of the mountain provide pretty spectacular views. I used to love NF25 which runs south from 12 starting in Randle, but the pavement has been getting worse over the years and I worry about that oil cooler. It’s been a few years so they may have repaved it. Maybe I’ll hit it up this summer and see how it looks. It’s like 45 minutes of twisties with great views and very little traffic. Great if you want to take all day to drive to Portland, since you can connect up to I-84 via wind river road/curly creek road in Oregon and go across the bridge of the gods, which is pretty spectacular.

They sell aftermarket metal oil cooler guards for the underside. Currently only Fall-Line Motorsports has guard, but I heard Turner is working on a wider one too that might spark my interest.

Hiker dude is wrong, that’s def Adams. You can tell as there’s no giant north facing crater
Great photos, looks like it was a wonderful hike !

Yeah, i’ve seen that Fall-Line one, it looks decent, but there are still big holes in it (which obviously you need for airflow.) Still way better than the plastic piece we have as stock though I suppose. Interesting to hear that Turner is working on one as well, it’ll be nice to have a couple of designs to choose from.
Are you in Seattle? I’ll give you wave if I see you around!

I guess the width just protects the side Heat exchangers?
